    Covid Ramblings: Ski, Bike, Raft.

I'm not sure how to feel about the amount of traveling I've done since the majority of the began their quarantine. Maybe I'll get some flack for this. For some, 2020 has been the worst year ever. For me? I've been doing alright.

The New Year brought us blower pow, storm days, and the occasional sunshine.

In the middle of February, we had a wild storm. 54 hours later, we were allowed outside.

Mid March, things got a little weird.

My birthday was Friday, March 13th. I had to get out of town. I scrambled out, wondering what all this COVID ruckus was about.

I went to Moab, and shot for a 27.9 mie ride for not-quite my 30th Birthday. I rode solo.

Later that evening, I met with a friend in town for drinks. We said “hi” with a tap of the ankle.

I woke up on a friends floor, moderately hungover, for my 28th birthday. I opted out of a morning ride and headed North to Alta.

Arriving around noon, I went straight to the bar to visit a friend from home, who had ventured to Alta the same year I did. He left that first Spring, enlisting in the Navy.

I heard murmurs about the Collins lift, still being closed.

A few more friends were in and out, a few more beers drowned.

Later we went to the Peruvian, who would know it was the last of its kind.

Saturday I tried to catch up on work, never strapping my skis on.

Saturday evening, we got the news. Alta would be closing for the indefinite future. No more drinks were served at the PDog.

The next few weeks were full of confusion and hope. Did I still have a job? Where are my friends going?

The beginning of April, it started snowing again. The resort opened for Uphill travel and uphill we went.

Uncontrolled but familiar, a few slides went big.

May was wild. Bikes. Skis. Whatever.

Moab is closed? Lets camp in San Juan County.

“You’re their problem now” said the Sherriffs.

From here we can Ski, Bike, Drink.

Work? Nah. No one else is.

    St. George? Sounds dope.

Fuck it’s hot out, let’s go to the hottest place imagineable. I'll stay up all night because it might be cool then.

I have a terrible idea. Lets float 80 miles of flat water in a not-very-sporty-boat. Bored? Try some of this. Bonus points if we make it to the Confluence at 4 am on the second day.

Took care of that after my second trip. It was on the list but the list is long and I had already spent all my money.

Solid. Its been a weird year for sure, but a good one for human-powered recreation if you are lucky enough to have access.

Likely not. It's really difficult for me to get time off mid season.

It also depends on the epidemiological situation, weather conditions. If the state lines are closed, you won't go anywhere. The increase in the number of cases is very upsetting. I’m afraid we won’t meet our relatives even at Christmas. Not to mention travel and entertainment.

You're absolutely correct. Typically I go home for Thanksgiving. I told my dad I couldn't go because I didn't have enough vacation time. He told me that he was upset I wasn't voting for Trump. We don't always see eye-to-eye. I told my mom and my siblings that I wasn't going home because it would be socially irresponsible. They get it. Sometimes I don't.

I think it's great to get out and take advantage of these times. As long as we do it in a safe and responsible way like wearing masks in some parts even if not mandated. I had a ton of fun getting out this summer as well. Cheers!
