I dunno, the density of ski areas & population helps. If Verbier raises to 200 everyone will just go to Chamonix. Same dynamics that had Vail competing with Winter Park for affordable season passes I guess.

In the Alps the ski stations just get you up the mountain. Nobody greeting you in the liftline with hot chocolate and no ski patrol securing the boundary. And yep no liability insurance. All that s**t adds up.

Anyways, young Mikaela will be back...

This sounds like the beginning of the end of Mikaela's racing days.

He was very obviously referring to the MJ suspension conspiracy in a joking way.

As for rooting for Mikaela's downfall, are you referring to a different thread? I don't see a single post suggesting that. Mostly just understanding why she might burn out.

super cool kid from an awesome family who started out at the mighty Dodge Ridge

    go go Keely!

But a season pass at Verbier is 1450 CHF (about $1600). A 4 Vallees pass is 1560 CHF. Engelberg-Titlis is 950 CHF. Seems similar to the US before the advent of cheap Ikon and Vail passes (and other resorts trying to compete with them).

This is not an attack on her character.

I wouldn't tie the money to the issues you are trying to talk about. Burke even with that price tag is probably only on par with some of the more expensive Northeast/Cali day schools and its a much different place. Its not Loomis or Avon or Deerfield or Lawrenceville. I have met and know BMA people. I also know quite a few 10 schools people... much different people. Agree that the singular focus on sports nowadays is not a good thing.. ski racing, lacrosse, soccer, whatever. But you seem hung up on the school and money... thats not it.

On a serious note, I wish her well and she should do what feels right... If she took care of finances, she can ski or write poetry or travel or whatever. When it feels right she might come back or not. Too many people doing something because that is what is expected. If she wants to get off the hamster wheel and figure things out, good for her.

Crazy sports parents on the other hand I have no patience for. Those who pretend to have all the answers regarding what is right for their kids - nobody has a magic 8 ball.

That is nothing short of effin impressive! I mean, a racer with 66/175 top tens would have been considered seriously good. Somebody with 66/176 podiums would have been considered an ace. 66/176 WINS is out of this world!

Edited to add: OTOH, Ingemar Stenmark's 86/230(?) Isn't really bad either..!

Just curious how that stat compares to others? Easy to find total world cup victories but I can't find total world cup starts anywhere? Assume the win percentage for tech only skiers like Hirscher and Tomba, or speed event only, like Vonn, may be even higher.

    Probably his-ski.com

For by way of comparison LV has 395 starts, 82 wins and 137 podiums
    https://www.fis-ski.com/DB/general/a...68&type=career

Here is Vreni Schneider: 173 starts, 55 wins, 101 podiums

Should all be accessible off of the FIS official site. Select an athlete and career stats are available.

Anne Marie Moser: 175 starts, 62 wins, 114 podiums.

Just as long as you don't post garbage stats like the ones football announcers love to use to fill dead air time (ie most of a football game.) I don't want to read "most 2nd place finishes in first 37 SG starts".

    Well, let’s see:

Most wins in a season by any racer
Most wins in a single calendar year by any racer
    Youngest Olympic SL champion
Youngest to 50 WC wins, male or female
Four consecutive SL world championships, never been done before
Only racer to win in all six disciplines, male or female (but parallel is new, SG is only since ‘85?)
Most SL wins, male or female
Most prize money in a single season
Highest average points in a season
    Highest average points in career
Out of only ten women who have ever won ten or more times in a single season, Shiffrin is three of them.

You mean those kinds of stats?
