I need to go to Utah.
    Utah?
Yeah, Utah. It's wedged in between Wyoming and Nevada. You've seen pictures of it, right?

So after 15 years we finally made it to Utah.....

Thanks BCSAR and POWMOW Ski Patrol for rescues

I still remember being in in the 7th grade. My buddy pulled out this vinyl and said, "You have to hear this band." I was blown away.

I didn't even like the stuff after about Fair Warning, but he guy was a guitar genius.

I always loved "Hot For Teacher" as a showcase that Eddie was so fucking badass he could start the whole song with a ripping solo.

I haven't been able to get into Van Halen either. That said, he was one of the greatest to ever pick up a guitar and certainly the greatest to ever shred. Godspeed, Eddie.

Can't say I was a huge fan of the band, and Eddie was reputedly an asshole, but the immense talent, skill, and innovation are undeniable. The brown sound was beautiful.

Well today is a sad day for me. Growing up in Glendale, Van Halen was the local band all the high school kids loved. Saw them many times at the Whiskey.
Eruption was Van Halens calling card and if you don't like this, well you don't like rock & roll.

That first album was balls to the walls rock, kinda like this song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qtwB...PhpiXs&index=5
Gods speed Eddie. I hope you and Jimmy are having a solid jam session right now.

Damn, RIP. When I first started playing guitar, I liked to think I could figure out some of his tracks. One can dream....
"Eruption" gets a ton of hype for guitar mastery, but I always thought the drill part on "Poundcake" was his #1 moment.

Girl down the street gave me II she won off the radio Summer 1979. She said it only had one good song and wasn't worth the trouble.

One quickly followed then everything through fair warning. As OP observed, hard to imagine high school without it.

Will be pouring out one tonight.

Damn. Van Halen hasn't been in my rotation much in the last 30 years, but they meant a lot to me as a kid.

I think I first started paying attention to music when I was in first grade in 1983-1984. My father listened to some good "new" music that I liked: The Cars, The Pretenders, Dire Straights, The Police along with a lot of Miles Davis, Ornette Coleman, McCoy Tyner, etc. But that was his music. I wanted to find my own. The biggest pop hits at the time were by Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie and Culture Club. That's who the kids I knew who talked about music talked about.

I got ahold of some tapes by those bands. I listened. I learned some of the words. But it never felt right. It was all too Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah or something.

Then I went to a friends and his older brother was listening to "Hot for Teacher" and a lightbulb went off: I was not a "Hello, is it me you're looking for..." kind of guy, I was a "got it bad, got it bad, got it bad..." kind of guy, even though I had no idea what the song was about.

    RIP Eddie. Thanks.

Classmate from boarding/reform school could play eruption note-for-note. this was 1980. He said the "flaimingo shit" on women and children (spanish fly?) He said that was the hardest. By far.

He was Amy Grant's guitarist for many years.
