That's the sketchiest anchor I've ever seen, or imagined in a nightmare.

No kidding! They seem pretty lackadaisical and not too respectful of death's potential.

The fact he decided to continue after almost dying is mind boggling.

I can't believe they went up planning to use those sticks as an anchor.

I could see using them as an improvised emergency anchor, in an unexpected situation, but since they thought ahead enough to bring an anchor, why not bring a better one?

Also, who just drops into a couloir like that without testing the snow?

"Do you really know how to do this?
confidently "Yeah, I've done it before."

proceeds to build an anchor out of two fucking forearm length sticks a penny in diameter.

It can be hard to tell when Nikolai is casually putting himself in harm's way, and when that cavalier attitude is just part of his schtick. There was no schtick in this case. I hope he dials it back a notch and lives a long time.

I get that climbing/skiing super high consequence stuff is this guys schtick, and how he makes his living, and i also get that he is phenomenally skilled both physically and mentally, and likely edits everything to look far sketchier and bro-brah cavalier than the actual reality...but damn. It sure seems like he searches out the sketchy shit to push his limits on, where you only find your limit once.

Its certainly a different vibe than Cody Townsends Fifty Project... which IMO shows a more relatable/agreeable risk assessment and management style.

It’s fine, but the snow is super bad, almost pure ice...maybe you shouldn’t do it.

    LOL - you think?

His vids are generally 1) highly entertaining and 2) absolutely terrifying

I don't think I would have mentally recovered from the scare of that to even consider trying it all over again, let alone use twigs as an anchor on my second attempt. Dude is fucking nuts!

That's a lot of risk to get a ski.

I would rap off that anchor a hundred times rather than drop in on skis. Wtf was he thinking?

Someone needs to teach him to pole whack.

Or at least to climb up what you want to ski down.

This is what i thought. I always rather boot up a tight chute or couloir rather than drop in blind, but climbing up also has risks.

Anyone else find the danger driven clickbait of that guys videos pretty gross? Honestly, looking at his vids/how blatantly dumb this mistake was I wouldn’t be shocked if that dude put himself in that situation on purpose.

    Title: "Death over rappeling"

    Title: "Unsuccessfully dodging an avalanche"

His impromptu rappels and blind drops are simply unnecessary risks directly attributable to inadequate route and line knowledge. In the second video, he bootpacks up unstable snow with exposed rock slabs underneath without crampons.
"We didn't bring crampons because we thought we were going for a chill hike."
Don't get me wrong, he is incredibly talented and has balls to his ankles but some of this is just stupid. I don't mean to be the guy with all the technical critiques but it seems like he is adding an unnecessary element of danger to an activity that is already incredibly perilous.

I particularly enjoyed the one where they debate bringing 30m or 60m ropes while prepping at the cars. They settle on 60m ropes, but somehow end up at the entrance with just one 30m rope and giggle about getting them mixed up. Seems like staged bullshit to me on that one.

Yes, indeed. I suppose he has accomplished his ultimate goal. If you have TGR thread about you, without your being in it, you have arrived. You are the shit. Except for DeepSouth.
