I ate a whole bag of licorice one day. I felt like shit for two days. Luckily I was still in my 20's when I did that. If I tried that now I wouldn't be a bit surprised if I died.

Licorice (the ingredient, not necessarily anything that's shaped like a traditional licorice stick) is a legit herbal medicine, and like a lot of things it can be good for you in moderate amounts (or just taste good), but large doses can be a problem.
