skin reglue

I got some BD Ascension nylon skins with fucked up glue recently. They aren’t old and dirty, but they’d been reglued with a BD reglue kit and it didn’t work out. Personally, I’ve never had good results with the kit.

It’s super easy to remove old skin glue. People think it’s a big deal but it’s not. What you need is heat. A lot of people like to use parchment paper or brown paper grocery sacks and an iron. Not me. I don’t think it works that great.

A heat gun with a scraper attached to it it a great way to do it. Just heat and scrape the old glue off of and out of the skin material. Just be careful you don’t burn the skins. These things get pretty hot.



Another good way to do it is the way I did it today: hang or lay out your skins in the sun to heat up and soften the glue, then use a scraper to remove it. The nice thing about this is that everything is heated up evenly so you can scrape off a large section at a time. I removed the center strip so I had the entire skin to work with. I got most of it off.

Did this last year and agree it was not nearly as big of a pain as people made it out to be. Another tip I found somewhere was after the new glue is applied to cover the new glue with the wax paper that skins usually come with and iron everything smooth. I got nice uniform coverage and a shiny finish with that.

IIRC AT Apostle (AMcL/straightshuter) claimed you could take old skins to the dry cleaner and they’d come back glueless, clean as a whistle. Turned out his dry cleaner was using some super-toxic chemicals that had been, or soon were, outlawed. But a number of Ttippers took their skins in to cleaners that weren’t using the toxic chems...hilarity ensued.

Doing this in the sun is a great idea. Did you get the rest off with the heat gun afterword?

The iron and parchment paper technique works for skins that are gunky but still sticky. It can help you get 10 more days out of a pair that are starting leave crap on your bases. But when you do this you're typically going to have to do full re-glue before too long.

I'm not going to worry about the residual glue. It's clean and it's mostly off. I think it won't be a problem. In fact, I think it will melt into the skins when I warm them up before I put on the new glue. These don't have to be perfect.

Good thread! Fuck buying new skins. I’m going for as much mileage as possible. I had an ok experience with the BD reglue kit that comes in a role. But I some how managed to apply too much of it or something, and now when I store the skins glue on glue it’s a real fkn bastard to pull them apart. I’m using some love gloves to deal with that which is fine. Might have to take em to the cleaners soon though. Would be a sweet hack if that worked eh. Besides the storage prob I’ve had no issue with the glue and how it sticks to the base.

Reglued mine a few weeks back. Heat gun a putty knife and a piece of cardboard and 45 minutes later they were cleaned and reglued.

I've had good success with BD's tubes of glue. One tube will cover 3 pairs of skins for me.

Really not sure why all the hoopla surrounding it. It is a very easy project.

The reglue job can be a shitty/messy time if you don't get set up for the process

I use a designated piece of OSB that is 1' wide, I screw the skins down side by side so they can be scraped with a putty knife using the heat gun and i have desiganted pieces of cardboard to wipe the scraper on

regluing on a piece of wood I can pickup and put outside means the job can easily go outside to off-gas, also when left out in the cold the glue sets up/ releases from the parchement paper much better

somewhere to wipe the glue makes for a much cleaner job

I use 1 tube for a pair of skins

you do have to heat the new glue, using parchment gives you a nice smoove surface, if you are good with the iron on a reheat job you don't need parchment but I like to use it for a reglue
