Protests?

They used to be 187 Protests with stripper top sheets and a bunch of ugly, off-center holes. They've been resurrected as Woody Guthrie Pros.

Orbital sander, spray paint that sticks to plastic, homemade stencils, masking tape, $75 skis. They ain't pretty up close, but I like em.

With the way this country is going, you're going to get shot by someone with those on your feet.

I painted them in March but mounted today. Didn't expect the message would become so "current," not that I mind. Gave our younger son the middle name "Guthrie" since he was born on labor day, and I like Woody.

Do you have the stencils still? I think frangers need to make a series of them.

Stencils were of the poorly made single use variety. Can't find the files I made. Must have deleted them. Could make again. I thought it would be cool to keep Woody's font so I used this image or a similar one and then fiddled with it using GIMP:
For the other ski I uses a guitar silhouette stock image.
Thought about putting:
This land is your land...
This land is my land...
on one tail and:
From California...
to the New York Island...
on the other.
But I got bored of fiddling with stencils. Steps:
-Print the images and make sure they're the right size
-cut out the bits you need to cut out with an X-acto knife
-glue the paper onto the ski with a glue stick so none of the corners curl up and let paint underneath
-tape around the edges with masking tape
-spray away
It took 3 or 4 coats of the green to cover the old topsheet. Wold have looked better if I did 5 or 6 thinner coats. I think I did 2 coats of the black. Again, 4 thinner coats is probably the ticket. I was inconsistent with how much glue I used so there was more overspray on some letters than others. It could be done much better.
Like I said, it ain't petty up close. But I like the concept. I'm dreaming about having Keith make me a pair of veneer UL 192s with a proper version of the same concept, plus the lyrics on the tail. But I'm probably too cheap for that. I'm more into skis in the $0-400 range. But if I like the Protests enough...
