Make your own Free Ski Boxes

Have you ever been in the situation where you have a pair of skis to sell, but no box within to ship them?
The solution is to build a ski box with free materials from Fedex. The tubes can either be obtained from any fedex store, or ordered on-line and delivered free. Once built, skis can be shipped by any carrier.
    1) 2 38x6x6 tubes are required. Make the first tube. Cut away the flaps at the middle, so that only a

Completely open the second tube and cut away the end, so only a triangle is left. Cut away the middle completely

Join the two tubes, so that the triangle from the first tube (white) is inserted into the middle (cut away) side of the 2d tube). Then tape the two middle sections together. Place skis in box an, fold over the triangle of the 2d tube and tape shut.

It takes 5 mins., it's free and it's easy. If you don't like the fedex logo, then each box can be done as in Step 2.

When I ship flat skis I put a strip of cardboard between the base and topsheet of the bottom ski. Then cap the tips and tails with cardboard and shrink wrap the entire length with packing wrap. No box needed.

I do the same, but don't have easy access to shrink wrap, so I cut down the sides of a contractor bag to make a long, heavy plastic sheet and just roll the skis up.

The FedEx box hack does look a lot better though ...

Fedex' website sez you gots to pay $7.50 (each) for those triangular tubes.

You can order 48x6x6 boxes for under $3 each from uline but you gotta buy 25.

I'm thinking about selling off almost every ski I own so maybe that's the route I should go. I just inherited a bunch of FIS WC skis...gonna have to revive my Pugski subscription

Golf tubes cost $7.50. The ones in my pics above are free.

These are listed under free fedex express boxes:

I need to go to Utah.
    Utah?
Yeah, Utah. It's wedged in between Wyoming and Nevada. You've seen pictures of it, right?

So after 15 years we finally made it to Utah.....

Thanks BCSAR and POWMOW Ski Patrol for rescues

Yeah, they're free if you use FedEx to ship them. FedEx shipping costs are $12-$15 higher than USPS rates for a ski-sized box (east coast to Seattle which is where I shipped the last pair of skis I sold). The nearest FedEx store to me is more than 30 minutes away. The PO is 5. If you have a FedEx store convenient to you, it works but not if you live in the sticks.

The uline 74x4x4 boxes work really well to ship flat skis - just dont open the box all the way up and keep them mostly flat - 74x8 flat(ish) box that you can seal at both ends. Same way that on3p ships skis, which is where I got the idea. I think you can get 10 at a time for less than 3 bucks a piece.

I know a wife/husband combo in Aspen that have some unused ski boxes for sale.
They expected to selling ship a few hundred skis last spring, but due to their new living situation, they are no longer shipping skis.
