It’s back on Outlet, now it’s $107. Still a good deal.

Quick enough. Like, once you start to pack up camp, turn off the fire and break down the hose/etc. Let the box sit while you pack up kitchen etc. Once you're done with the kitchen it should be cool enough to handle. And if not, it's an ammo can - dunk it in the river.

Finally decided to get one of these. My partner has asthma and hates normal campfires.

What's the consensus? Cheapest one you can find on sale? Any brand better than others?

Is the ammo can setup worth it? This will mostly live in our sienna camper so compact is nice.

    Thanks!

We have a cheap outbound propane campfire that does what it’s designed for. Just about time to replace the lava rocks. If you are out for a few nights, think about a larger propane tank than a 20lbs.

Any opportunity to test your wife’s asthma with a solo stove? It might burn clean enough once it gets going. They would be better if you want heat as the propane rings are 80% ambience unless in a very sheltered location.

I just went cheapest I could find, it's not tiny but not as big as some (camp chef compact size). Works great.

Really kills the bugs on river trips with fire bans. That is all I can say from experience. The ammo can ones are kinda easy to make, but worth it for the plug and play no brainer engineering and to support some cool builders.

I ended up purchasing the big ammo can version from lavabox. It’s impressive and functional for groups of all sizes. Altho it goes thru the Dino juice extremely quickly….I now have a dedicated 35lb tank to run it. Pretty happy w it overall.

I have been trying to convince my neighbor to get a solo stove with the hopes that we could test it out but so far no luck. I'm definitely curious about them. Even a hint of smoke smell is pretty upsetting to her though since it reminds her of not being able to breathe...

Tradeoffs for the propane stove of not getting soot all over the car and more flexibility with fire bans (we are in California) might be worth the lower heat output. I guess in an ideal world we'd have a solo and a propane one...

Sounds like the ammo cans are working out well for people and I'm happy to throw a little extra cash at those folks, may end up going that route.

The only thing I’ve found with the propane fire pit is it uses a lot of propane.
We usually have 3 bottles on our trailer, but I was still surprised at how quickly it went through it.

Solo stoves work. After the initial burn they are actually smokeless.

I had the medium one. But it didn’t take full logs.
Upgraded to the Yukon on kickstarter and it’s perfect.

Gave the medium one to a friend and he’s been tailgating it.

The one complain that I've heard is the you have to continually keep adding pellets for it to really burn well. Haven't actually used one yet though.

Never used it with pellets. Just firewood.

They started with a mini rocket stove for backpacking. Twigs is all you need.

Now it’s full on fire pits. Ain’t cheap. But works well. And stainless steel.

I have an outland but it's kind of big and cumbersome to haul, so recently picked up one of these Lava Boxes and really digging it. Super portable and put's out some serious BTUs

Just get a turkey frier when they go on sale.

Multiple use for fire heat and cooking.

Or learn how to make an actual camp fire with wood.

Lots of places have open wood fire bans so the LP fireplace is the best you get.

Probably said this upthread. But a Turkey fryer is awesome if you block the air vents. It’s a licking propane flame instead of a cooking burner.

REI has an ammo can setup, minus 20% member coupon starting tomorrow you are looking at $160:
    https://www.rei.com/product/198221/i...table-fire-pit

It looks nice but it doesnt have any lava rocks in the kit, nor the oomph of the Lavabox Volcanno, though the Volcanno with the standup feet is $230 (and I assume plus shipping). I think I'm gonna throw down for a Volcanno though.

I've been using my Big Buddy heater which doesn't have the same ambiance appeal, feels nice but is about 120 degrees directional, and the biggest drawback is that the Big Buddy really sucks in the wind so it just hasn't been practical for ski camping in the lot.

At home I rock this thing in the backyard ... spendy compared to the Solostove, but this one is built to last forever, and looks nicer IMO than the solo.
