Uses for old iMac?
I have a '09 iMac. It's working great but I can no longer update software so a lot of websites/apps no longer work. Was going to transfer all my saved stuff over to a new laptop. Haven't picked the laptop yet-probably something apple because everything in our house is now apple.
I wanted to use it as a second monitor for work but it's too old to connect properly to any laptops or anything really apparently.
I doubt it's worth anything so do I...?
-Stick it in the shop for music and videos. Youtube still works but I'm guessing that will be outdated on my machine soon. Could leave music on it but it's pretty bulky to sit on my workbench and shop isn't insulated.
-Develop a porn habit and make it my dedicated porn machine.
-Give it to a nerd and let them figure it out.
What is it good for if I move to a new laptop? Give me some ideas.

What size? If it's the 27" model from late 2009 you should be able to use it as a display if you get a Mac laptop - just need a Mini Display Port to Thunderbolt cable and use Target Display Mode. If it's smaller you're out of luck. Personally I'd check with local schools to see if there are any families that need a computer for remote learning.

I'm impressed that you know the model year of your computer.

depending on your level of tech savviness you can run a lighter weight linux distro on there pretty easily (mint should run great) and keep using it, if you have any use for it... otherwise donation bin imo

My wife uses an old computer to print photos on her good photo printer. She keeps that setup hardwired, prints off portable drives and I made sure she can't get on the home network or internet with it.

I have Linux installed on two of that model year iMac. Both have Minecraft on them and my kids play together on the home network.
One of them I use for all things. Google Office, web browsery, TV streaming, freeCAD for parts design and architecture nerdery, octave for math-fu, Inkscape for making binding mount templates. Download server for Raspberry Pi images. Web server, website ripper offer, FTP server, scripting engines of all sorts. The list goes on....
As an old Mac it’s nearly outlived its usefulness, but as a Linux machine it’s still more than relevant.
