legends, lore and luaus a western tr aka what i did on my summer vacation

    well yeah
    dark clouds of global pandemics
silver linings of potentials appear then disappear
    then another appears
the luau was always something i plan on
back when we were on lockdown and the wife said utah would peak mid july early aug, i was thinking im fucked
or one hell of a time to git out of the hood
My cali hippie bro Jose and i traded texts/plans throughout the spring and summer
Harry retired and id planned to fish with him this summer
So other than requesting a couple weeks pto from work i didnt make real solid plans
Joe got into town monday, i cranked out one last nofunday and headed home to pack
The plan was to poopfish the bear tues
well given the choice of poopin in triple digits heat or rolling up n to elevation and being shown new waters
    Joe picked green
Im packing joes stoggie smokin and brown water sipping
hes bemoaning not being able to git a haircut
Id canceled some crown work to go skiwithharry at bigsky in feb, then the lockdown came my practitioner of dental arts cancelled my appointment
im bemoaning this packing and eating and i break a crown
So I send jose off tuesday morn to hook up with our bro saulminnow and go to the dentist to make sure i wasnt going to be dentally fucked on the wyo/mt land
he took xrays cleaned it up packed some temp stuff on the sharp points and told me to go git the fish on
fur kid and i hit the road
    legends and lore bound

    rolled in bout 420
“The danger of civilization, of course, is that you will piss away your life on nonsense." from The Beast God Forgot to Invent”
    ― Jim Harrison
    a little nonsense never hurts

I met my bro saul on the suk
hes one of them salt of the earth dudes who i kinda knew we were gonna gel at the 1st pm
he and his old lady met at the gmd bummed a few wasatch seasons then moved on windsward way
they have a cute little crib in town, but recently purchased a ghetto cabin and some land outta town by 1/2 moon and Fremont lakes to chill at and store the toys
    nice spread

we settled in jose made pizza dough and whipped up meatlof for dinner

sheldons girlfriend Ellie showed up i got drug thru the gravel and the bitch friend zoned him hard

we got up and out early and headed up towards the winds

ran shuttles and got the float and be happy on

there were fish rising so Saul takes joes rod and says you need to hit the seam here and tosses to an eat of probably the nicest fish in the pod

one of those classic guide moments
    cool but busy stick water

jose lit em up pretty well

    junk tossing bum up front
    not so much
    blacklipsmatter

    as does the rainbow coalition

i took the sticks and put R into a few

    sheldon sheldoned

    we got buzzed
but i was slow to git the camera out

Turned a few nice fish and stung one on the junks
    did manage an eat

so it rained pretty good that night
    we woke up early
i gave joe my national park pass he went that way
I remember a time in my life where i needed to fish hard and gits em before it was over
and 2 weeks on the road gives ya time to do that
with a lot of the little things you passed by before to fullfill the need to catch more fish
and an bigger outlook of a bigger picture or some hippie stoner crap i tell myself as an excuse for not fishing harder

i headed the long way back south pass style

to rendezvous with as hagen calls us mountain hippie one week a year friends in cody
The rendezvous of mountain folk has history and the luaus no different

It was pretty cool that an old timer showed up one night as the history of the luau goes back to the interwebular beginings as westwood camp in one of the og whippy stick fly flinging forums
0ver 1300 named lakes and endless miles of creeks and rivers the winds have a lifetimes or 2 of piscatorial pursuits potentials

sheldon and i will be back
i gotta say hes a bit needy and a bit of a cupcake at times but damn this latest gods finally maturing gitin his chill factor on nicely

stopped here to git safe and look for risers

    safe but sorry no sippers
stopped again here and swung the tailout in skunky futility

nobody home in the foam either

no poopers cruising on the res flats either

    stopped again
    odaat

stoked to leave zion and miss another mormon manifest destiny weekend i dont think ive stayed in town for a decade now

fireworks suck and are a waste of money

gotta cross it if your on the western trail

pounded out the miles stopped to let the furkid cool down at the wedding of the waters after a 1 hour chip seal traffic clusterfuck outside boysen
one of these trips im gonna fish it
    rolled into camp bout 420
    again
jose beat me by about 6 hours
set up the tent to dry out and we went down to the river to git the swing on

    connected with a few

lando and hagen showed up from their s fork float and harry made it into camp
    taco night didnt suck

So finally after not partying on the carp slut for several luaus the stillwater call was made
hooked the slut to the 4 runner

    the smokercraft to landos rig

    and headed montucky way
    past the wyo hemp farm

got the boats inspected and launched at yellowtail
lando gave the slut a quick test lap

gave it over to sheldon and i and we took off

we checked a few side canyons but they were occupied or windy
found a good one and they left to go fast burn fuel and sight see
Ran over the 1st pooper pod trying to figure out the pedal controls for the trolling motor
found some happies put the ballpeen craw where it needed to be and checked the catch a pooper on the carp slut box

    the crew showed back up

    sheldon decided to swim
    it rained
    we rode the storm out

    met locals

    Nice!
    Solid werks here, my friend.

I enjoyed the N.Fork Shoshone float immensely. Will plan on more of that next Luau.
The camp, food and folks were plenty good fun.

Harry, I got pulled over 20 minutes after I split. Got away with a warning by the trooper, 64 in a 50mph zone.

Glad you enjoyed the elk and am sorry I couldn't cast with you. BTW, Harry is way too handsome to be called a mule. Here's what the mule looked like that packed half of my elk last season:

If you ever have a chance to go on a road trip with SFB, do it. I was fortunate to have been included on 8 days of this 2 week adventure.

It’s like living inside of a Hunter S. Thompson novel. Absolutely surreal. I’m already looking forward to next summer’s trip.
