I was thinking about this. Maybe POC is the Swedish connection? BD owns POC and Pieps. Could be POC has something to do with the design of the unit. Just guessing here….

When did BD get POC? Did it coincide with POC backing off their leading-edge-most-protective-everything a couple years ago?

Some thoughts upon finally touching a Mammut Barryvox vs the Pieps Pro BT w/ recall carrier. [I didn’t feel like I needed the features of the Barryvox S, but the recall beacons I received from Pieps/BD were the Pro version so that’s what I have, even tho I warrantied Sport DSP’s. That unit difference doesn’t feature in my comments below.]
1) I didn’t realize Mammut was using a plastic frame as a carrier too. This softens some of my angst & anger at Pieps re: the recall plastic frame…some, not all. Mammut’s frame isn’t a switch restriction device, tho, ie…not a crutch/afterthought.
2) The Barryvox feels smaller in the hand; more ergonomic for having seemingly the same mass; you can wrap your hand around it. The Pieps beacon is flat & wide & more slab-like. They were probably trying to create slimmer bulk for carrying. I think I like Mammut’s shaping better.
3) The Pieps/BD slider switch sucks balls in comparison to the Mammut switch. I used to think it was fine and usable. Now, having used a properly useful switch, all I can say is: at least you should only need to be switching it on once a day & off once a day…(stay safe out there!)
4) The Pieps recall plastic frame really does its job and restricts the slider switch from going anywhere while it is in the Send position. I have to concede that. It does mitigate the problem very clearly.
5) The Barryvox does not seem to take lithium batteries. That’s disappointing after having used lithium in the Pieps. I really liked the lack of acid leak threat AND the longer life, despite the cost $$$.
5) I’m torn on the Pieps. The electronics are top notch, and the performance for searches is really unimpeachable. The switch is not good.
6) The Mammut is simple and effective. Group check is straight forward. Signal acquisition at distance is impressive. The switch fucking works. Carrying bulk seems good for pocket or frame sling.
So, I have (2) Pieps Pro BT’s w/ +/- 30 days on them for sale for $100ea + ship [established mags first, PayPal F&F or add fees]. I do not know if the 5yr warrantee is transferable, but hopefully we can work that out.
(& thx to mikeyb for helping me switch…!)

happy to help
I agree with all of your points and prefer the Mammut for the same reasons you do.
I was happy with the old Pieps until my switch broke. I was happy with newer Pieps until I got the Barryvox.
I have barely used the BCA Tracker 4 I got in May.I didn't believe in reincarnation when I was your age either.

I've been happy with the Mammut as well. Read the manual to verify but I believe it can use lithiums as well.

The "S" version can use lithium batteries.
Power supply: 3 x LR03 1.5 V Alkaline (AAA)
or 3 x LR92 1.5 V Lithium (AAA).

Yeah, no lithium for reg Barryvox
First line in the Batteries section: “Only use alkaline (LR03/AAA) batteries of the same type.”
