Pretty much that. IME having a big platform to allow you to not clip in is usually more trouble than it's worth, since you wind up setting your foot in an awkward location to keep it from clipping in and then the pedal isn't loaded right, the cleat may or may not get in the way and reduce the shoe's traction, and the whole thing is an unpredictable mess. And you only do it when you're trying not to commit to something that goes better with commitment. Maybe this is what one-sided pedals are for?

Bodes well for him that he's tying to pick one type and stay with it. Bailing from clipless is a lot smoother once the ankle turn is a solid reflex. I never remember doing it but I haven't stayed stuck to a bike involuntarily since about the first year or two of clipless.

The shoe that fits is the best.

I got a good deal on a Giro Ventana that I'm liking quite a lot though. Had to put green superfeet to make the fit better, but I'm like 200 miles in and don't have any issues.

Thanks for mentioning the superfeet. I had forgotten to do that in the new shoes and they're sorted much better now.

I bought SPD’s and shoes from a shop in downtown Paris in ‘90 or so. There was a language barrier, so they couldn’t explain how to get in and out of them. I left the shop on one of those huge 6 lane boulevards, and at the first red light, promptly fell over and couldn’t get out. And my bike was loaded for touring. It was 5PM.
Many sneers and jovial laughter directed my way.
Life embarrassing moment, that one.

The marketing team must have moved on to peloton, but a number of the kids at my high school that liked the bikes ended up with onza pedal after learning on SPDs. Still confused how onza did it. Having to untie the shoe to get off the pedal or the temp driven pre-releases weren't enough evidence to throw away after spending the coin

so dependfing on a elastomer for spring tension didn't work out so good ?

I was always curious how that pedal worked out

Shoes: Sidi Spiders, 6 years old, probably 5000 miles between commuting, CX/gravel, and MTB. I'm on my 3rd set of "replacement soles" (really just the rubber parts bolted to the sole) but the shoes themselves are still in good shape. Occasionally I wind up on a long hike-a-bike where I'm reevaluating my shoe (and ride) choices but 99% of the time I'd rather optimize for riding. Before the Spiders I ran Dominators which would last 3-4 years before the sole turned to jello and the upper started to tear apart.

Pedals: various Shimano SPDs, mostly M520 and M780. I don't pay much attention, they seem to all just work.

BTW if the leatehr or leatehr like product your shoes are made of gets too scuffed/worn you can mitigate that with you guessed it

Ha! Those were my intro into clipless.

Me too! First ride? Slickrock. Did a lot of sliding backward down the rock attached to my bike. Learned clipless by the end of the trip though!

Hahaha that's how I feel. Nothing subtle about these in any color but couldn't say no for the price. Fuck it. They are REALLY nice.


Incidentally, still sitting on a pair of NIB Terraduros, size 42, standard width (skinny). Warranty replacement. Love the shoes but they just don't hold up to all the hike a bike I do, in the Chamber 2s now. Anyhow, $75 shipped? OBO?

I've been wearing sidis for a long time (genius on the road, dominators for mtb/cx/gravel) and they're fit me great and are comfortable all day.

But shimano sent me their s-phyre road shoes and that has me looking at the rx8s and xc9s. If they had the silver/white rx8s in my size right now I'd probably order a pair.

OP, what are you going for?
Kestrel lace and 530's are a great combo for riding bikes in the woods and then not looking like a tool later. They also walk fine if you loosen the ankle strap. They work pretty well if you're riding flats for a bit too.

I own the previous versions of the XC7s and ME7s, both in 45. I read some reviews suggesting the RX8 was fitting narrower and peeps were sizing up if possible. I went 45 and find it to be a very similar fit to the XC7s.

Couple things:
- SPD slots don't come as far back as the XC7s. I tend to run my cleats further and further back these days.
- Carbon soles are getting marked up/pitted/scratched easily it seems after only a few days of riding.

ordered sidi 15's and giro sectors - sidi's definitely a hair wider - for me the giro's a better fit.
