Sad news. The Ho family is so important to pro surfing, and Derek will always be revered

Pretty wild that he was still surfing Pipe this winter. Lived life to its fullest to the end.
There will be lots of heavy hearts on the North Shore for a long time coming.

Here’s to making the very best of 55 trips around the sun!
Hard to imagine playing it better than that.

55 isn't old. I wonder if he had some undiagnosed issues... Such a great loss to Hawaii and the global surfing community. Seems like the guy was around for ever. In reality, he was not much older than I am. Thoughts and Prayers!

Damn. I grew up watching him and Michael on the north shore living in Hawaii in the 80's and early 90's. He was such a cool guy and would chat with any of the groms who would walk up to him. Rip in Peace.

Very sad to see this. He won his world title in 1993, the year I entered college and right around when I started surfing. Always amazing to watch at Pipe.

Same here. I remember being 13 and reading about him winning the world championship in Surfer mag and was surprised a Hawaiian had never won it before.

    RIP Derek
I've concluded that DJSapp was never DJSapp, and Not DJSapp is also not DJSapp, so that means he's telling the truth now and he was lying before.
