Pretty sad. I've ridden on the 747-200, -400, and when we went to Yurp this fall we were bumped to the Lufthansa 747-8 after we missed our scheduled flight due to weather. Such great airplanes.

But this one chart is why they are doomed, along with the 380, 340, etc. The 767 had them from the start. Really kind of amazing they lasted as long as they did. The freighter versions could be the next B-52 bomber though in terms of longevity just because of how functionally efficient they are on the ground.

    Not quite.
    Maybe in two years.

Always enjoyed the 747 even though there are nicer and newer and bigger planes out there. Just something about it - like riding in a vintage sports car.

Loved the upstairs lounge in 1st class way back when.

I had a chance to ride home in a BA 747 a few years ago, LHR - SEA, but they took it off the line for service. I was bummed, I was looking forward to a last ride.

Six years ago we were in LA visiting schools and took a detour so the boy could do some plane spotting. Damn it's a great looking plane.

I’ve only been in business class so no 747 first class lounge parties while in flight - but I always race my friends to book the upper deck seats - then I mock them if they’re relegated to the lower “steerage class” level

747-8 Chicago Frankfurt. Pre covid. Interior of uglymoney class and over a lake in Michigan. Those engines much quieter than a -400 but the plane is still way louder than a 787. My parents had paid for economy plus on Untied so luckily lumped my (cheaper seat) with them and gave us bulkhead seats on this flight and after two drinks they came around again and gave me and my dad whiskey which made it tolerable.

10 years ago took this one Tokyo to Sapporo.

Both national airlines had 747s flying this route hourly in both directions (think about a two hour flight between cities around you and then imagine two 747s doing this route every hour - that’s a lot of people moving around)

I thought it was cool that the overhead screens would show you the take off and landings using exterior cameras.

Once you have flown 1st class in a 747 to Yurp, everything else is shit. Business class, meh. We got bumped to 1st class on a Virgin Air 747 from San Fran to London years ago. What a glorious trip that was.

Yup. It's kinda sad to think that our kids will never know just how kick ass flying used to be. Now they're nothing more than a bus with wings except with less legroom than ever.

Other than some of the gulf airlines does true first class even exist anymore? I mean I know they sell it. But it doesn’t look twice as good as current business class.

I won't miss the 747, but then we never flew one first class or even business class.

It is almost better not to know how wonderful flying can be OG. I was ruined after that. Sure we would fly business class to Yurp, but nothing will ever come close to the 1st class flight with Virgin.

Back in the 70s there was no bookiing upper deck seats. It was a open lounge with captians chairs for 1st class passengers to spread out.

Fun trivia: Did you know John Travolta is certified to fly 747s?

Took a couple photos of this beauty last year when we were in the airport waiting for our flight to Norway (we flew Icelandair on a 757. No comparison).

A few years ago SFO got whacked on a friday by a big storm and caused a huge mess with the SFO-LAX commuters, so United pulled up a long haul 747 to clear the jam. This would have been awesome.

I miss the Delta DC10 Widebodies with no first class section but the front 1/4 of the plane was a bar. Those flights were a party.

FKNA! Pan Am's 747 Dine In The Sky service for the win. $241 for First Class LAX or SFO to Hawaii. Take Off, hit altitude, the upstairs turned into a bar/restaurant with 4top tables and meat carved tableside. Holy shit. After dinner, the movie came on downstairs and when it was over, you were circling Honolulu for landing. Best flying experience I ever had.

The fact that the two timelines for those two things coincided was beautiful.
Plus, because I had a little Leonardo DiCaprio hookup in Waikiki, I was getting those tickets for $50 max.

My old man helped put the wings on straight on this one.
Scientists now have decisive molecular evidence that humans and chimpanzees once had a common momma and that this lineage had previously split from monkeys.

Yep but flew NW Orient to same destination. Was a grand time the 70s sans the Vietnam war and Nixon.

I can imagine that Virgin first class is a great time - and you got bumped up which is gonna make it even more of a fun experience.
