The goal is to dump money to keep people in food/rent etc. Until the currently unavailable jobs (waiters, retail etc) are available again and their normal income is back.
Don't do it? They default/get evicted etc. And you have a lot of not easily solvable social problems vs just a slight hole in the imaginary bank account. Also a lot of angry people out on the street with nothing but time on their hands and their backs against the wall.
Economics is not about fair shakes or what always makes sense at the individual level, it's about what keeps the economic engine going vs throwing an anchor in the track.
Beyond that, it's ultimately a government's job to take care of it's citizens, otherwise why does it exist?

IMO the number one primary function of a government is to protect the health and well being of it's citizenry. 2 is defense of the borders.

You got a PPP loan. You're paying these people with government money and keeping whatever profit they generate for yourself. Of all the things to complain about, the one that pays you to post on TGR is the top of the shit list.

There are only two reasons for you to complain: either you make so much money from your employees' time that you wish you could get more of them, or you're worried the loan won't be forgiven if you can't get your payroll high enough. You could pay more and resolve either of those issues through good old supply and demand. Clearly though, crying on TGR really is the most productive use of your time. It's good that your employees are such hard workers.

My wife is climbing her ladder. So that’s helping.

The number on the top of my scale will change with new CBA’s, but I am now at a level where I don’t get increases just for staying. I get more paid leave, and my safety award is now accounting for 8 years of no at-fault accidents, so it’s like a few hundred $$.
The biggest thing with increasing seniority is I snipe our schedule like a fucking precision laser guided, gravy-seeking missile.

Anyway, the fact that the stay-homers (in fact, henceforth I shall apply the term and nickname “Homer” for them all) are making more than us workin suckers has been a source of not-insignificant bile around my work culture. I suspect that’s not just here.

I’m making a point (to whom? Good question...) with it though..The conservatives at work moan about socialism and go on and on about work ethic and all that.....if I’m a socialist, I mean, it starts with FROM EACH according to his ability. Ask not what your country can do for you... I feel those things in my core. Did we all forget about that part? Pretty god damn important part.
So, hey, whatever, I’m not Homer. I drink my little coffee and I ride my little scooter to work and I eat a little sandwich at lunchy time and I listen to a little music and say a little bad word or three while I fight a little traffic. Then I scooter home at sunset and walk my little dog to the beach and talk about our workies with my little lady and have a little old drink swatting little flies by the little old campfire. It could be so much worse. Really, I’m not grinding it out in the rat race, I put ketchup on everything...these are the good times.

The bill was written and passed in days, it would have taken far longer to implement effective means testing. Shit, I've never stopped working, didn't need the stimulus checks, but between myself, the wife and kid I got $2,900. Haven't spent a dime of it yet. I'm far from alone there.

Why not spend it? Do your part to prop up the economy. I’m helping keeping LBS afloat, or in business, or maybe they are booming. But I did my part.

I guess you didn’t really read the post. People having as little as 4 hours a week cut in Washington are getting an extra $600 a week on top of their unemployment benefits. We participated in Shared Work at the hospital and my benefit would have been $695 a week if I had claimed. I was only losing $144 a week because my hours had been cut by 4/week. The CARES money was intended for people that were actually laid off or lost their jobs. I choose not to take the handout because it didn’t feel right.

Some of the nurses and techs that I work with were making more with 10-15% hours cut. These people make $50-75k a year or more and they’re coming out ahead, working less and making more.

Oh the horrors of the non rich getting a leg up finally. It is such a shame. At least the government was smart enough to save some to keep the mega corps form failing due to poor contingency planning while they were making millions in profit. That part is good. Amiright?

I think there was a pretty simple solution. Tell the payroll companies to pay wages based on January-March 15 salaries or average 19 earnings up to $100k / year for any laid off / decreased earnings employees. Fed floats the $. Skip the unemployment, PPP, etc.

I don’t think corporations should get any bailout, I think the unemployed should get something for sure, if truly unemployed the $600 a week won’t make much of a difference, but it’s a start. I’m not okay with with giving an extra $600 a week to people that are basically still working full time.

Where is this money coming from? They just print more, really they don’t even do that. It’s created out of thin air and we will all have to pay for this down the road.

The short of it is...if they refuse work from you they are no longer entitled to collect unemployment benefits.

When someone fills out the weekly or bi-weekly unemployment claim there is a question that asks "have you refused any work?" Now I have never refused a job but isn't is safe to assume that if you refuse a job you are no longer qualified to collect unemployment???

I have not seen a COVID -19 befit claim questionnaire. This is based upon my experience filing in various states in the last 20 years. I find it very unlikely that the eligibility requirements have changed.

One of the worst jobs I ever had was because this guy was at the unemployment office waiting for a strong guy to come in so he could offer work right there in front of the unemployment people. So that clever asshole offered me a job doing construction demolition labor for minimum wage. I pulled a whole house full of mouse nests down in Taos, and got as sick as I’ve ever been, thought I might die, too weak to get up and go to the hospital. I was down for weeks. If it wasn’t hanta virus it was something that would give hanta virus a good old run for its money.

Anyway, I guess that’s a lil trick for all the awful slave drivers out there and a lil warning for my fellow slackers.

Three are at risk of staying closed forever because the owners are tapped out, one is a family run place and they don't have the heart to offer the jobs back because of this so they're staying closed for a while longer. One store tried to call everyone back and they said no so the owner cut off their unemployment, a few days later all the windows got taken out at night and the place got wrecked.

As if the small biz community wasn't already in trouble, this will be devastating for the rest.
