Here’s a story about giving and getting nicknames. A guy I know put together a book called “Just A Few Jumper Stories” from his many years as a smokejumper. Here’s a short one about nicknames.
A Good Nickname
I can’t remember which base this story comes from. Six or eight guys were sitting around the campfire on some fire in the West, and it happened to be one of the rookies’ first fire jump. He was very excited, and maybe a little full of himself, and he started expounding on what a great experience this was.
“Wow, this is great! I’ve looked forward to this since I was a kid. It took four years on the shots (hotshot crew), learning a lot about firefighting and that was great. But, it was time to try something new. Then, to make sure I was ready, I trained all winter. Rookie training was really tough, but I made it through, and survived all the practice jumps.
Now, here I am. No kiddin’ man, here I am. I jumped my first fire, and it’s official. I’m a smokejumper! I can’t believe it. This is great! You know what? To really finish the deal, all I need is a good nickname. And you know, I don’t want some goofy name like Fuckstick or nothin’.”
There was a pause, and one of the older guys sitting at the campfire reached for another cup of coffee, “Well, . . . that was easy.”
My brother’s given name is Edward. We call him Ned.

I suspect there's logic behind the madness, but I'm too dumb to see it.

I was scrolling through some mugshots today and came across one perp whose name was literally "Anakin Skywalker".

Ernest Tartsnatcher or Pleasant Tartsnatcher is the real question here.
Hugh Jardon or Michael Hunt just don’t have that certain je ne sais quois cachet.

I received dozens of cassettes and CDs for a penny back in the Columbia House days under the name Jim Naysium, Mary Juana, and Scarlett Begonias. College dorm addresses meant they couldn’t reach me after I got the goods.
