Is Ed an acceptable first name?
We debated this when we considered baby names. My inclination was to rely on evidently meaningless formality and say that you ought not to give your kid a name that is actually a nickname. So, name him Edward but call him Ed. Or name him Richard but have everyone call him Dick. Mrs Cruiser, who is notoriously tolerant, took a more liberal tack saying that you can pretty much name them whatever you want and they'll be fine.
So, did any of you name your kid a nickname like Bob or Mike or Ed?Brandine: Now Cletus, if I catch you with pig lipstick on your collar one more time you ain't gonna be allowed to sleep in the barn no more!
Cletus: Duly noted.

I think this is trending. I know a kid who's just Will on his birth cert, not William.

Back when those sparkly vampire movies were all the rage there was a massive boom in babies named Edward, I'm positive someone snuck an Ed or two through.
I still call it The Jake.

My take was to set your kid up for the job you want then to have. How does Supreme Court Justice Ed Crusier sound vs. Supreme Court Justice Edward Crusier?
And kids should figure out their own nicknames.

I have a friend whose given name is "Danny" not "Daniel." Always thought that was weird but who am I to say?
A 150 years ago I had a relative named "Pleasant." Used to be a common man's name in the south. Things change. Names are fluid.“When you see something that is not right, not just, not fair, you have a moral obligation to say something. To do something." Rep. John Lewis

Naming our kid Jerry if its a boy, Gerri if its a girl. That way i can always make fun of the stupid shit that Jerry/Gerri does as a child.

This.
At my prior office there was this 5' 5" pile of shit, steroid popping, jock sniffing, raging asshole who referred to himself as Badger, a nickname he gave himself because he fancied the way he played hockey. He would introduce himself as Badger to everyone and insist that younger, less tenured associates refer to him as the same.
I would shame anyone who called him that. That's not how this works.
That's not how any of this works.I still call it The Jake.

Well if your name was Erectiile Disfunction Jones I think you'd be justified in calling yourself Ed Jones.

Is Ed an acceptable first name?
We went the other way when considering names for our spawn. We developed a list of possibilities that had no diminutive. The idea was similar insofar as you name the kid what you intend to call the kid.
(We still end up calling him all sorts of things, but there’s clarity on his name for others)

KidS plural
Not kid singular. I was meaning the playground will figure out what to call each other for nicknames. The individual kid has some sway in shortening a given name (Edward to Ed or Eddie), but only the collective wisdom of the playground can determine if the kid should be Fast Eddie or not.I've concluded that DJSapp was never DJSapp, and Not DJSapp is also not DJSapp, so that means he's telling the truth now and he was lying before.

I suspect there's logic behind the madness, but I'm too dumb to see it.

I have a nephew who is a total liberodouche. His kids are named Ronin, Coco and Hudson. I would take Ed over any of those names. However, this is from a guy whose parents gave him a girl's name (Carmen). It's all good. It's not about the name, but rather the accomplishments.
