How about a sturdier name like Kenesaw Mountain Landis?
Now that guy had a name that told the other kids "Don't fuck with me".I still call it The Jake.

We thought about it a little differently . We personally have a hard time with "classic names" that are spelled in...interesting ways?? We took the coffee cup / pencil rule, if you can't find their name on either of those two things then we passed.

Eddie is a good casual name from Edward. I know a damn fine Eddie IRL, that helps me like the name.

Had some friends who were so overcome with joy when their daughter was born that they named her Joy but oh no.... she was SPECIAL so the spelling needed to be too. They spelled it "Joye." She hated it every day of her life. No one could pronounce it (thought it had to be accented) and she was often mistaken for a boy by people who didn't know her because they thought it was a weird spelling or typo of Joey. Plus she was bummed she could never find her name on any of the kids pre-printed things like bike "license plates" notebooks, pencils, etc.. Of course this was back in the 80s. Now days you've got Vistaprint and Cafepress and can get anything printed up with the name of your choice.
Re: Ed. I've known several who were named Edward. Some chose to shorten it some didn't others changed halfway through life (when they became professionals). I like Edward and the diminutives thereof. The ones I knew in school were nice guys. Never heard their names used in a derogatory way. Doesn't really matter what you name them when it comes to bullying using names. Kids will find a way.“When you see something that is not right, not just, not fair, you have a moral obligation to say something. To do something." Rep. John Lewis

Our friends have a Maggie that isn’t short for Margaret and a Zoey that isn’t short for Zoseph.
My wife was insistent whatever we called the kids needed to be their first name, not their middle name. My name is a nickname for my middle name, so I protested. She scoffed and still insists that my parents broke the rules.Remind me. We'll send him a red cap and a Speedo.

Yeah, Utah. It's wedged in between Wyoming and Nevada. You've seen pictures of it, right?
So after 15 years we finally made it to Utah.....

A short-name like John for Jonathan is selected by the individual.
A nickname like Shitdick is given.
Name you kid the long-name so they can choose to be a William, Will, Bill, or Billy. You’re going to call them Shitdick anyway.

There is only one nickname for someone giving themselves a nickname-DICKHEAD.
Whenever I meet someone that introduces themselves with a nickname not derived from their legal handle, I ask them "How did you earn that nickname?". If they then say something like "it's because of how I play hockey", I would ask "Oh, did your teammates give you that moniker?". If no, I would walk away and mutter "dickhead" under my breath. That guy just earned a nickname.
