Ski Chile 2020, one rider down

Dumping in Portillo at the moment. This could be the last snowfall in the central zone for at least a week. The south will continue to get clobbered.

The road to Portillo and the customs complex is only for trucks and returning Argentinean citizens. It looked like this earlier in the month (3,200m), with a nice view of the Roca Jack and Super C runs

The next paved and open road to Argentina going south is Pino Hachado (1,900m), 50km east of Lonquimay in the Araucania region. Normally relatively dry with much less snow than the volcanos to the west, it now looks like this

A bit further north, Volcan Antuco is sitting pretty. You can barely make out the platter lift in the snowy middle/bottom. The dirt road that goes around that volcano to Argentina is closed until late spring.

Stupid question, but how do you think the snow will be in October? South will be better I guess, Corralco? Looks like I can change my booked (August) flights for 1st to 22nd October.

BTW, any chance you can give us beta on the ranchito development?
And how does the land purchase, house approval, zone system work in Chile?
    I'm interested.

Y si yo vaya Santiago este año, compro cervezas, vale?
Forget August, and think maybe Oct 1. Flights are totally unreliable, I would not even book. The state of emergency is extended to Sept 16. Santiago is definitely on the steep down side of the curve, but that masks districts having trouble getting below 200+/100,000. Expect news on a slow opening over the next 10 days.

On buying property here, it is fairly straightforward for a foreigner, lots of people do it, in particular Europeans. If you want more info, PM me no problem. At least where I have land, cases are very low.

Beers would be good, outdoors of course!

Noted and thank you. I guess I was just wishing and hoping about skiing this summer. Layoffs have just started at my workplace and everything's looking uncertain going into fall. Noted too about the property, it's a long term idea.
    Cheers!

last time I was in SA, we were traveling from Mendoza to Portillo and my van driver used my giant bag of American chocolate to bribe our way though customs, or to at least make it smooth and fast(er). While on the road to customs, there were dozens upon dozens of trucks lined up waiting to get thru cause the snow that was dumping outside for the past 5 days had closed the border/pass, and as we got up higher and closer to customs, and we approached a tunnel full of semis, the van driver quickly veered right and exclaimed something I couldnt understand, and we found ourselves on the old dirt road next to the tunnel that had great exposure and death looming a foot off the road. It was icy and I had to move my knee every time he shifted cause we were sitting 3 deep in the front drivers bench seat. So, we make it through customs and get to Portillo at about 3pm with 2 hours left of shred time and an abundance of pow. We promptly got our bearings then went up high in search of stoke and the fluffy stuff. we managed to get cussed out by Dav who claimed we stole his shot (for the Spyder catalog) and laughed about it for the rest of trip. We ran into that Caroline gal from SLC and partied with the Austrian ski team while finding other types of pow at the owners nephews lakeside cabin and then got dirty looks at the locals bar across the street. Man it was wild and we were definitely flying by the seat of our pants on that trip. It seemed hard to figure out Portillo during previous research, because they only want to sell you the week long packages (is it still like this?) and we just said fuck- lets go and see if we can get in, if not we will just continue to Santiago. We ended up crashin with a couple guys from Australia who had 2 extra bunks and then they left a couple days early and were had the room for 2 more days. The last day in Portillo about 70% of the hotel guests got sick from something in the water, luckily I did not bud my travel partner did and he was holed up our hostel in Santiago. I explored the city while he rested and I really enjoyed it. I ran a 5k with the residents, toured the markets, went to museums in search of art, documented the street art scene, ate a million stuffed churros, got tear gassed while accidentally finding myself in a student riot (turns out it worked and they got the free college they were protesting for- in 2016), and was told not to take pictures of the protestors or I could be arrested myself. Those student rioters were in about every town I went to that summer and it got a little sketchy more than once. We took a bus down south, hit up some hot springs, shredded some volcanoes, as we meandered towards Bariloche; Which ended up having no snow at all really, but damn that place is beautiful. Then my travel buddy randomly had to go home to deal with some taxes, wtf buddy! and I hopped on another bus (got the semi casa seat this time whoo hoo!) and headed to Portillo. Had some fun there touring around those rocky spines and hitting up the Mars lift. Finished up back in Mendoza to complete my big Arg/Chile loop and flew home, in need of a long happy nap.

wow- I didnt mean to type that much- but the one pic of the boarder and Roca Jack took me back. I really wanted to make it back there this year but thats not gonna happen. I'll just keep dreaming...

    From Argentina a week ago:

Argentina Ski Centres Currently Open: 0

Argentina has had a strict lockdown in place since mid-March which appears to have limited the spread of the virus more effectively than in many other countries. The lockdown has been extended several times.

One of the country’s leading resorts, Las Lenas, announced in late-May that it won’t now open this season whatever happens. Other Argentinian ski areas so far seem to be still hoping to open.

Argentina’s ski-season was due to begin from mid-June but it currently remains on hold. It is unclear when it will be able to begin and how it will operate if it is deemed safe to open ski areas.

In July things began to ease slightly with the ski area of Cerro Castor down near Tierra del Fuego and the world’s most southerly developed ski area opening its resort base and ice rink to local people in the province. Itr is believed it is the first ski area in the Andes to also permit back country skiing although its lifts are not running.

Otherwise most ski areas in Argentina are warning backcountry skiers that they should not be hiking up to ski slopes in the Andes during the ongoing lockdown there. They warn there’s been no avalanche prevention measures and there are currently no rescue or medical staff on site whilst resorts are closed. As there has been a lot of snowfall, the avalanche danger is extreme.

They have done well with the virus there and today announced limited opening of the southern ski areas.

Chile is still far from opening ski areas. The most likely to open may be the furthest south ones, where they are already in a limited (called stage 3) opening.

Since yesterday I cannot post pics, so no photos of the recent snowfall. TGR tech problems?
