Runs are still cruising groovy in LP which is taking the central zone load of skiers. Between Portillo and 3Valleys less than half the central zone lifts are running. Today was quiet, with spring definitely in the air. Clouds were protagonistas above the upper LP bowls

Great packed powder but a bit too hot, and the clouds are back complicating but cooling things.

Nice to have had my edges done.

What with no restaurants and only 2 bathrooms on the whole hill (not a problem for me), people cluster where the action used to be. Only those eating appeared not to have masks.

With no new precipitation in sight for the central zone, what is left of the season is pretty limited. Yesterday was 24C in Santiago.

La parva will close at 14:00 the 17th, and reopen the 21st, as Lo Barnechea (comuna of the ski areas) is only in phase 2, they have to close for the Fiestas Patrias long weekend (“el 18”).

    ENSO says:

A majority of the models in the IRI/CPC plume predict the continuation of La Nina (Niño-3.4 index less than -0.5°C) through the Northern Hemisphere winter 2020-21 [Fig. 6]. The forecaster consensus supports that view, and favors a borderline moderate event (Niño-3.4 index near -1.0°C) during the peak November-January season. In summary, La Niña conditions are present and are likely to continue through the Northern Hemisphere winter (~75% chance; click http://iri.columbia.edu/our-expertis...enso-cpc_plume CPC/IRI consensus forecast for the chance of each outcome for each 3-month period).

The drought now is back in force in spite of the July to date precip being close to normal.

Santiago now has a 40% deficit for 2020. This goes down as one gets south of Chillan, with Osorno being near zero.

The dying forest on the Cerro Manquehue in Santiago:

That bit of green will be history in about a month.

Still a great place to hike -

Chile is now in the run up to the tumultuous plebiscite on a new constitution on Oct 26, meant to placate the restless protesters, and eventually put Pinochet’s constitution to rest. The state of emergency will end after the 18 and the protesters are sure to be back at it. The scenario is not pretty.

I went downtown for a notarized transaction today and it has been mostly fixed up after the destruction in Q4 2019. I hope it stays that way.

Thanks for the updates. I had such high hopes for a return of water to the central region after a good start to the year. A few coworkers in Portillo talked often of “desertification” progressing further and further south. Most others seemed to think the past several poor snow years we’re just part of a larger cycle of feast and famine type water years and that the snow would return.

Crossing my fingers that issues behind the civil unrest are resolved in a satisfactory and less violent way. I’m also hoping Chile is able to manage Covid better than their initial response appeared to an outsider.

Stoked you’re able to at least get skis on snow!

The requirements for entry and other info are available there. They are trying to get a handle on access and control of this vast high mountain playground, in particular sleds and other motorized sports.

Restrictions on snowmobiles in Chile are increasing at the same pace as the anarchy. The kids in the araucania are already playing with timber sleds and trashing the slopes.

Got a last hurrah in LP yesterday. While the base area is goupy, the main runs were all good. Everywhere else was bare, with shape shifting snow movers on the prowl.

One person per lift in force.

Got the gear down to Stgo., ready to load up for Villarrica at month end.

Seems like these AgresteChile people are making a business out of sled-poaching the Mapuche-Pehuenche-owned los Pehuenches ski area. That's some bullshit. We were there last year in October and talked to the women running the lodge. They said they're trying to make it into a ski-touring area, and that they don't want snowmobiles destroying the peaceful atmosphere, but nobody can enforce it.

Interesting to see this Parque Arenas thing. Is it some kind of greenwashed public-facing arm of Alto Maipo?

Edit: yeah, that's what it is. At least they let you in. Fuckers.

Well, probably a bit true. What is also true is that pehuenches use snowmobiles too, but more as an approximation aid for those farthest reaches. Which is what Agreste says they do too. The real problems are the day tripping yahoos, and others that can´t imagine walking up anywhere.

Alto Maipo has a water concession and the right to protect their infrastructure. That said, it is quite a nasty project for a lot of people, in particular those living in the affected areas. Here is a good documentary on the subject. https://youtu.be/GYqsZQDlUeY

The road was built by Alto Maipo to their water capture/tunnel installations there, but the park itself is a private conservation venture. Their pitch, google translated, is:

The Quebrada Morales or Valle de las Arenas, is located around San José Volcano at the end of the Cajon del Maipo, Chile. The valley is home to vast glaciers and glacial lagoons, towering mountains, important archaeological and geological sites, and flora and fauna, such as the guanaco and condors, that are in danger of extinction. It is a special place, only two hours from bustling Santiago; where one can go and walk alone in nature. It is a place that deserves our protection and must be accessible to all people.

We are happy to tell you that Quebrada Morales has new owners and management and that we are in the process of creating a new conservation project for the valley. The mission of Parque Arenas is to preserve natural resources for the enjoyment, education and inspiration of this and future generations.

We are in the initial stages of the formation of this park and the creation of our management strategy. We ask that you first be patient with us. Parks cannot be built in one day and achieving our conservation goal will be a lifelong project, with the help of many people. Second, we ask for your help. This is a park for the people, so we will need your help and support to create it.

The govt announced inter-regional travel will be permitted starting Sept 28, the day we leave for Villarrica! At last. BUT, only between 2 comunas in phase 3 or better (as are both Vitacura and Villarrica), and then there is this trend

Tomorrow is closing day for La Parva. In about 2 months the biking season will open. La Parvas Las Aguilas quad looks like this in the summer:

It is possible to just keep on going down to around curva 17, a 1,800m total drop, and even get 500m more down to Corral Quemado. I took these pics between quarantines
