Grizzly T's has really good bar food. Drink in the front - eat in the back.
Downtown grill has good food. Not much ambiance.
Casa Del Sol is always decent for Mexican. Good atmosphere and has a small outside bar.
I'm a big fan of Lisa G's in Placid if you dont mind the 10 minute drive. Everything on the ever changing menu is great. The bartenders are always friendly and you can eat inside or outside. Food ranges from burgers, to great personal pizzas, schnitzel, and great entrees. Great vibe and great food.
Cafe Rustica in Placid was always a favorite, but I've not been there in years. Food was always fantastic. Higher end.
I'm not a fan of the food at the Hotel Saranac. It is over priced and misses the mark. However the 2nd floor balcony bar/lounge area that opens onto the balcony is hard to beat for a few cocktails.
If you want a real local place hit the Shamrock Bar and Grill just off rte 30 heading toward Paul Smith's. Maybe 7 minutes outside of town. Really good basic food and a super local backwoods upstate joint. I stopped in there for a beer once and they had a free end of season buffet set up. Cool joint - zero pretense.

Thanks.
Just got back yesterday. We had a sweet rental on Kiwassa lake and got the fire roaring early and the beers/wine/music cranking both nights so didn't end up eating out at all. First night we got some shitty pizza and wings delivered. Second night we picked up Tail O' the Pup on the way back from Placid. Was pretty good, but not amazing. The beer however was excellent. Wish I could report back on consumption of UC, but one of the guys in our crew brings all sorts of craft stuff everywhere we go. I was alternating between Young Lion Lakeside (out of Canandaigua) and Big Ditch Hayburner (Buffalo) all weekend. Both are super tasty.

Did another lap of the Hudson Valley today. I considered another TR but decided to put it here for the real upstate fans instead. It started out pretty typical.
The sun came out before we got to North South Lake around 8:50 am but it was around fifty degrees, a lot more chilly than it was downstate.
The temperature was significant because the little kayak is a wet-ass guarantee. I had suggested bringing a sit inside to my son the night before but he liked the yak board. It was fine since the younger one was still sleeping in the back seat. I did a lap paddling the tandem solo from the center position and kept dry.
North Lake is a pretty place to paddle.
Junior took a lap.
After that we tried out the yak board with some scupper plugs installed but it was still too wet-ass for the temperature. We set up the tandem for two people, which was fine. Eventually Danger boy woke up so we took the tandem back out again.
This is where I saw a GIGANTIC snapping turtle years ago. We had the phones handy this time but of course he didn’t show. Next time maybe.
We had business in Albany so only hung around until around 11:30 before moving on. We took country roads up to exit 21 so we had something other than the Thruway to look at for a little while. Nice drive.
Of course my dad’s lawn wasn’t mowed since I didn’t go up last weekend. This time I had free labor to call on though. As good as a UC tastes after mowing the lawn, this might be even better.
We visited for a couple hours and ate some Fish Fry of course. The kids were good sports about following me around all day so we hit the Stewart’s on our way out for milkshakes.
Vanilla and the Sienna mint madness.
Pretty good day. Was home before 6.

Ok, I like that concept: even better than a beer drunk after mowing the lawn is the beer drunk while watching your kid mow it.
I may have to try that and see how it works.

Currently in the future cannabis capitol of Upstate. Canajoharie Beech Nut plant has plans to become a marijuana growing and processing facility.
“All dressed up…and ready to Grow” Probably not what the Chamber of Commerce was thinking when they came up with the tag line.
I laughed.

sweet, they can leave the lower windows open so when the canal floods that building again, the plants will have plenty of water...

Another town name I have no idea how to pronounce. And Wikipedia is no help - though it does include a long list of prominent residents I have never heard of…
