So I went out to see customers today. Metrics Schmetrics. Based on my neighbors’ terrified reaction to the snowfall, I’m going to make a call regarding Rockland & Westchester. I think most of you guys would agree with this anyway. Not upstate. I’ve never seen such a bunch of scaredy cat drivers.

I'm so glad I started it (humble brag). I have learned so much in this thread, sort of a compendium of the Upstate experience.

Wait. There's stuff on the other side of the lake beside Peppermints?

I grew up on the southern shores of Lake Erie, have lived in the Mitten surrounded by Great Lakes and sailed all of them; to this day you would not believe the amount of stupid comments you’ll hear locals and visitors alike say about them.

    No shit:

    salt water/fresh water

What’s on the other side (Erie, Huron, Ontario)? Canada.
No, really, what state is that, Canada is above us.

    Are there whales/seals/sharks in there?

Wait, that huge body of water can freeze? How?

    Can you swim across it?

There were battles between warships out there? Bullshit.

If it’s a lake, why can’t I see across it?
I still call it The Jake.

You know the US Navy was invented in upstate right? Though I guess if our war with Vermont went the other way we might have lost the town where it happened. Whitehall is pretty close to being New England.

This is why this thread exists. You just can't get that kind of beta anywhere else.

I'm partial to this battle: Battle of Lake Erie - War of 1812

All those times driving through Whitehall on the way to Kmart and I couldn't get over that sign telling me it was the birthplace of the navy.

also, it was invented by Benedict Arnold, which might be another good standard. Did Benedict Arnold kill British people around here? Yup, you’re probably upstate.

As with so many stories dealing with Upstate NY, this is almost accurate.

Fuck yes, and this may be the actual metric. If it snows a foot and your response to that is to exceed the speed limit driving to a bar while drinking a beer hoping that gets you in the right mood to trade punches with some dude, well, then you are in upstate.

Good call! That's right around the corner from me and I didn't even think of it. If it's 50ft of vert I'd be surprised.

The old hill next to ski jump? About 150' as I recall. The one hill there now with the rope tow? Never skied it but I'd say 50-75'.

If you wanted to skip the lift line and didn't mind earning your turns, Cobbs Hill had 100' vert of packed pow. Under the right conditions you could ride the runout all the way the the old POW buildings by Lake Riley.

When I was training to join the patrol at bristol we had to take a couple shifts at powder mills and north hampton parks. I was riding the rope tow at pm once and was passed by a woman skate xc skiing

    Lol

Thread drift (again) - I've had non stop snow for 21 hours now and it's supposed to drop a few more inches before the day is over. It hasn't added up to squat, about 4.5" but I had every type of frozen precip other than convective types (ie: hail) and some NCP as well. Really long duration storms are a rarity in my sub-Upstate region so I figured since there's a connection I should mention it. It's back to big flakes now so it will start to accumulate again.
