Shit, I live at the crossroads of all this hullabaloo in the Cap District, which is absofuckinglotely Upstate.

Heading south is my least favorite part of the state. I know there is a lot of beauty in the Hudson Valley, but WTF, did anyone ever hear of Zoning?! Dutchess County is one big fucking strip mall. I love NYC, but I hate taking the train for work and find the drive to be a PIA - man I must be getting old.

East is the strange land between the Hudson and VT. Some beautiful areas but a lot of strangeness. Not Ellenville/Catskills level of weirdness, but close.

North is upstate's best playground on the way to our friendly neighbors to the north. My wife agreed to move to Lake Placid or Saranac Lake when my kids turned 2. They are now 13 and she has no recollection of those conversations. I love that region of the state.

Head west for a tour of the Food & Bariatric/Cardiac Surgery highway. First comes East Utica Greens and a Saranac brewed UC. Continue on for overrated CNY BBQ or good Italian (almost anywhere in Syr). Stop in Roch for the often besmirched Garbage plate. Finally make it to the home of the special snowflakes and the absolute worst sports radio (Schope & the Bull dog) to enjoy a couple of Super Mightys and an order of Duffs Wings in the SAME SITTING. If your blood still circulates, hit Reids in Lockport for Cheeseburgers/slice/sauce and White Hots then head to Olcott for some Bye's Carmel corn and sit by the lake in Krull Park watching the beautiful lake that takes what Erie gives her.

I grew up in WNY with Pop and being offended by the Upstate label. As I moved farther east, eventually switched to Soda, and spent more time downstate I became all to happy to claim the Upstate Moniker.

About 5 years ago I did a one overnight work trip to Buffalo with a guy who never travels for work. I gave him a partial food tour described above. Utica for an early lunch of Riggies and Utica Greens, we met coworkers in Rochester at Nicky T's on Lyle Ave for plates around 3:30. We were going to skip dinner but he wanted authentic Wings and I wanted a mighty taco. Once in the Mighty drive through I harkened back to high school days, sacked up, and ordered up 2 super mightys and a Loganberry. We drove up transit to Duffs and got a double order of wings, which we split. I feared for my life that night, thought I saw sweet Jesus coming for me and could barely function at my 9:00 AM meeting. My coworker had me hit Duff's for Beef on Weck and wings on the way back. I dont think I ate anything the next day.

I've done about 3k miles in Upstate NY over the last 2 and a half weeks with another 1.5k since late August and I have to say that Upstate NY is a fucking beautiful place. Doing a lap of the place you travel through so many climate and geological zones and you also pretty much travel around the world culturally (in several aspects). Google maps keeps putting me in these incredible places, whether it's because I put in no tolls or shortest I keep going through forgotten places, spots we'd never see without the tech. This is looking at the northern escarpment of the Catskills from the south slope of the 'daks yesterday

Hey, dude. Take a quick look at that photo you posted. See any disgusting mouth-breathers? No! That's the most beautiful part of that photo. So ... ya know ... let's try to keep this all on the DL. Thanks for your cooperation.

That's a 50 or so mile view, sorry it's not better but at speed it's kinda tough, a second earlier or later and it would have been a wider view. A few hours later I was going in the other direction along that escarpment about 1k feet above the Mohawk Valley floor and the long view into the Adirondacks was insane but I couldn't stop in these people's front yard to take the pic. The thing about the property was it was exactly the type of dunghole you think of when you think of Upstate but they had the best view in the county. I really need to get a good dash cam (but- $) I can mount on a long arm and direct it where necessary on short notice. I have this whole plan that's been formulating over the last few weeks. I see some really cool stuff and some that is the epitome of what you'd expect as well as places that are hardcore everywhere USA. It's gonna be good

It's simultaneously harvest season and foliage season making it super colorful and tasty. I stop about every hour to grab something to snack on. Yesterday was melon and cauliflower. This brings on a state induced problem - What the ever living fuck is going on with just about every rest area in the state closed?! Not just the big ones along 87 and 90 but small ones along state roads everywhere and many town and county visitor centers that are state funds supported. This leads to gas stations and private businesses along the roads getting swamped with people needing bathrooms which leads to some really disgusting places. That tends to cause them to close the bathrooms making people have to go further off the road to find a place or having to get pretty creative.

Another view of the Catskills, anytown USA, the traffic sucks: https://photos.app.goo.gl/MFdFBkK9VzXUz7Hm9

There's a premature ejeculation joke there somewhere. However, just like the upstate, I couldn't quite figure it out.

The sticker is purely geographical in nature, I dont think anyone would dare question the upstate mindset.

Not if they know what’s good for them….

I discovered that my friend that was in Attica is still making music and has a new band called Brick by Brick. Even better, his label, a company called Upstate Records, released a CD with some old Attica tracks in 2019.

My bundle just arrived. Now I just need to figure out how to get the CD onto Spotify for the gym. Only one of my cars still has a player.

Well said. The fact is that Upstate is gorgeous. Thousands of lakes, great state parks, beautiful valleys and countless acres of farm land and orchards. It's an area bordered by two great lakes, the St. Lawrence seaway and the Hudson river. It really is a beautiful area of the country.

You've obviously discovered the endless miles of back roads and mountain vistas. Enjoy! And just dont tell too many people!

Yes some people notice. If Dutchess County and northern "Joisee" were countries and strip malls were their weapons then we'd have an arms race going on.

I totally don't think of Dutchess County that way but I rarely hit the Rt 9 corridor. When I think of DC my thoughts are of a pastoral place ruled by agriculture, lots of forest and many miles of fantastic mtb trails with a few cool small towns. We'll actually be spending this weekend in Rhinebeck, my wife has a booth at the handmade (craft) show at the county fairgrounds which happens to house the second largest fair in the state after the state fair in Syracuse. If you haven't been to Rhinebeck and only know the Rt 9 corridor from 84 through Poughkeepsie your impression of the county is only sorta representative of the place.

Dutchess has some gems. Dia Beacon and Taconic State Park among many others. I'd say they have a good strategy for generating commercial tax revenue (Rte 9) to support an otherwise bucolic county.
