In the past two pages I’ve seen the words “neatherlands” and “hinterlands”

Sure wish we could resolve this. Do “badlands” apply west of 81? cause it’d be cool to live in the badlands.

I know I am stepping back into the thread after a prolonged absence but this is crazy talk. I just can't wrap my head around NYC as a destination with "world class climbing", as pictured. Plus Ramapo and Sloatsburg have the revolutionary feel / apple picking feel to them. NYC has a little farm in Queens and, honestly, they can't compete with "Big Honeycrisp" upstate. Would someone please think of the farmers!

Upstate Dead Head literary content, seems about right.

Peter Conners’ debut novel draws from his 'Deadhead' youth, when he followed the Grateful Dead

    Peter Conners.
A great opening paragraph for a novel? Call me Ishmael. Yes, fans of Moby-Dick, simplicity works.

    But try this:

“The worn-out wipers smeared mist across the windshield blurring boundaries between the interstate, sky, and my own foggy mood. Industrial smokestacks rose like ancient Roman columns around the upstate city of Syracuse, New York. It was as if a gray veil had been pulled across the world. Within that veil lay the timeline of history: humankind’s yearning for spiritual transcendence locked in struggle against our ceaseless cycles of birth, sex, death, and survival. I didn’t know that murder lay ahead. I didn’t know that reuniting with my old friend would rescue me from isolation, but cost the last vestiges of my youth. As I drove through dark stretches of bleak October earth, there were ghosts in every dip of featureless landscape between Ithaca, New York and Burlington, Vermont. The sky bled with moisture that was neither snow, rain, or sleet, but some mixture of all three"

I will definitely read this, sounds like the zeitgeist of my youth.

    Ok, fair point…
The CT border someplace around Brewster to route 6 in Yorktown, west through Peekskill, across the BMB, down the PIP to exit 14, Call Hollow rd south into Suffern, 287 to the Jersey border. All agreed?

Below 287 is Westchester. Long Island is the Island whether you are in Montauk or Hicksville.

Brewster (?) and points unknown are Upstate.

Has there been a determination on if Saratoga is upstate?

287 follows 87 across the TZB, through Rockland and then splits and goes south in Suffern. That’s the part I’m referencing. Black line is the border

    Yes

Nice people around here for sure but they are not my people. Its not the city obviously but it sure seems like downstate. It has more in common with Long Island than it does with upstate. And Westchester… definitely downstate.
Rockland County is like Northwest Jersey, not Long Island (it only seems like Long Island because Long Island and Jersey are far more similar than either would like to admit). It is neither upstate nor downstate. Neither is willing to accept it as their own.

Also, if you put it to a vote, the folks in the city would not draw the line at the Bronx, or would do so in jest only. We always knew that "Westchester" is not upstate, we just call it that to annoy the people from Westchester. But anything north of Westchester? Fuck, no idea what county that is, which means upstate.
