The Upstates have a long history of being on the cutting edge of all thing beer:

    - Matt's was the first brewery to serve a legal beer after prohibition
    - The introduction of Cream Ale by Genesee
    - Beer balls, duh
    - Some of the first micro-beers were brewed out of Matt's (dockstreet, for example)
    - Many breweries at the forefront of the independent brewery revolution (Lake Placid, Ithaca, Ommegang)
    - The fine folks at Matt's helping to guide the Craft Brewers Association to a place of strength
    - The new wave of talented micro-breweries (Prison City, Other Half, Thin Man if you think Buffalo is upstate)

So now the Upstates are a haven for all kinds of beer drinkers. You want the original post-prohibition classic drinking beer? Utica Club. One of the very first small batch independent beers? Saranac Adirondack Lager. A classic microbrew? Ithaca Flower Power. A cutting edge hazy? Other Half Mylar Bags. Independently owned? All of them.

So if you are a micro person or a UC person you are happy in the Upstates. I expect respect to be given to all who swill hops. All beer is beer.

Unless there is fruit in it. Fuck beer with fruit in it.

And the VFWs, Eagles, Elks, Legion or "Lits Club" bars look just like this last picture, right down to the POW-MIA flag on the wall and emblem on the shirts, the old crusty dudes drinking cheap beer from cans with a coaster underneath and smoking cigarettes -- no cigars, too high brow!

Aqueducts are maybe not universal to the upstate but they’re around

Rafted up boats and jet skis. Yeah, boat culture is universal so probably is not meaningful to the discussion. Technically the lower Hudson is part of the barge canal system so….

For my sisters wedding the had a barge motor up the hudson to Rhinebeck. We all went out in the front lawn of the private venue and the crew that does the Macy's display did a fireworks show from the barge. Oh and James J.T. Taylor of Kool and the Gang fame was the entertainment...they filmed the whole thing for some tv show at the time....super fun weekend though.

I know this isn't strictly an upstate thing, but I'm gonna argue that Abbott's vanilla almond custard is the height of summer perfection. Started in the ROC and is now in a handful of states.

    Speaking of Upstate beer:
I haven't seen Equilibrium mentioned in here yet...

They make some fabulous beers. Middletown has something going for it.

What's the story with Colgate University in Hamilton? Good school? What's the town like? They got one or two gas stations?

There’s nothing they’re going to be able to teach you at Colgate that you couldn’t learn for $20-$40,000 less per year at any state institution. It doesn’t have the serious cachet of any of the actual Ivy leagues, but it does have all of the cost. The campus is beautiful.

There are two gas stations, but only one of them is technically in the town of Hamilton.
