Not to confuse this any more, but can anyone explain to me why Southern Tier Brewing is in Lakewood,NY on Chautauqua Lake?
Is Chautauqua Lake in Western NY? It is 45 minutes West of Bonaventure. Seems like if one of the nations best craft breweries thinks they are in the Southern Tier, I am going to trust them. Discuss...

Why the hell would you trust them? They literally start drinking when they walk into work in the morning.

Which I guess makes them like 40% of the adult upstate population.

One of the more ass-puckering experiences you can have is to find yourself on a closed I-86/NY17 during a puking lake effect blizzard with only the faint taillights of two highway plows in each lane ahead of you, escorting you and a Volvo to the nearest off-ramp, as you cross the bridge over Chautauqua Lake.

The wind hits your car like a ton of bricks down the N-S lake as it steams in from Lake Erie with all that lake effect with it, kicking the 3' of fresh the plows are removing from the bridge straight into the air to the point you can't tell which end is up. You can't stop either cause there's two trucks behind you as well.

I've never been so happy to feel the other side of a bridge under my tires (still couldn't see).

If you’ve spent winters upstate you’ve been here done that. I feel for you. You can almost drink the relief when you come out the other side.

I feel like nowhere else in the country really understand what a white out is. I’ve been driving 55 in storms that hit instantly and you literally can’t see 5’. That’s a damn whiteout. It’s terrifying.

As long as we're playing this game, someone needs to explain why Saranac is brewed in Utica.

Marketing baby. They were trying to distinguish it from UC and make it feel more upscale. Apparently a lake in the woods an hour north does that. Also, see the point about Southern Tier and drinking.

In the spring, months later, somebody eventually spotted his car upside down between a couple of elevated highways. Speculation is he went up and over a snowbank like a ramp, then got covered by more snowfall.

Wow, that’s horrific. I’m glad my fears have been confirmed.

I agree with your rationale, but I fear this is a double-edged sword.

No joke. Hands down, no question, in my top ten worst winter storms of all time that I’ve been in, every single one from 1 through 8 was in the Great Lakes region, and the aforementioned worst was in the Upstates.

Yeah, I remember when the poor soul hit the snowbank and shot off the elevated exit from 787. It sounded awful.

route 81 in syracuse has a long history of flinging cars off the snowbanks on the elevated sections…. done kilt the mayor of east syracuse that way

Strange, when I was there we referred to the area as the Southern Tier. They even renamed Rt 17 as the Southern Tier Expressway. Oh well, all I know is it was a beautiful place to spend 4 years in college. Awesome ski town 20 minutes away, all the best weed, 9 hole golf course on campus with $1 cart rentals, some of the best mtn biking I have ever seen accessible right from my doorway, killer camping spots, etc. etc.

If you have never done a fall drive on Rt 17 (Southern Tier Expressway), you are missing out.

So, while I was rolling through the Southern Tier last night, from I 390 to the eastern end, I got to thinkin'. Yup there was plenty of time to do that with all the traffic and such Before it got too dark to see I just appreciated the emptiness that is the ST and then the deep thoughts set in.

Is it Rt 17 or is it I86?
WTF is with the speed limit constantly changing? Fkn pita having to pay so much attention to something so trivial.
Who thought it was a good idea to have driveways and intersections randomly set along a hilly, twisty section of Interstate(?)?
Why aren't there more Wazers out here so the crowd sourced info about the proliferation of smiling NYS Troopers is more accurate?
Why are all the breweries along the way closed on Tuesday?

As it is hunting season, I came up with a few other Upstate definitions.

If the local bar has a “Welcome Hunters” banner outside, usually with a Busch or Keystone logo, you are Upstate.

If the high school has a significant amount of sick kids on shotgun opener, you are Upstate.

If you can hang a deer from your garage without pissing off your neighbors, you are Upstate.

All good questions. I've also wondered why there's next to no consistent cell coverage along an "Interstate" like I-86/Rt17 or what that angry looking old man is doing standing on his front porch every time I drive by despite it being balls cold and grey out. Always outside. Leering at the highway traffic, as if he's angry they put the road directly in front of his house. Too close in fact.

Its "Rte 17 future I86" where its not I86 already, due to Rte 17 having all those "driveways and Intersections" - conversion to I86 requires the removal of said driveways and intersections ala Roscoe area and Binghamton, where there are proper Interstate merges for off and on ramps, as well as proper roadways to meet federal requirements.

I'd estimate a volume of 12 UC for most domestically supplied console fridges ; capacities, always the first place you look in the manual.

Maybe where you can hunt with a rifle? That means Dutchess and Putnam counties are downstate which I don’t really agree with but it’s not beyond the realm of possibility

I drove W Ridge Road (104) from Brockport to Rochester and it was mostly about a half inch but close to 2" at the high point. Headed home there were a few NW facing spots along 390 with measurable amounts.

I prefer it over the freeways and don't really care that it takes a few minutes longer. This time we found a great store that we'll definitely go back to

As for the 2nd one- NYS does it wrong, probably because of the lower amount of hunters in NYC area and all. Pennsylvania handles this by just having a state wide holiday for the first day of Deer Riffle Hunting season. Schools closed the 1st Monday after Thanksgiving.
