So classy ass eating is a defining characteristic of the region now? This is going to be hard to ask the locals.

Best make sure we're speaking the same language. A Cony by any other name is a red with meat sauce. A syracuse coney is a white dog composed mostly of pork. In the white dog world, Syracuse has Hofmann, ROC has Zweigle's and Buffalo has Wardynski's which according to article below is the best although I reserve judgement for after a taste test.

It's the Hoffman's coney that I refer to. With a serving of salt potatoes.

Added: The red dog with meat sauce is a "Michigan".

    All of those sound fantastic.

But when I hear coney, this is what makes my mouth water.

I look forward to expanding my encased meats repertoire with the ones you mention above though.

To be honest, the first I heard of the Michigan was from my sister in law. Her family is from the Malone area. The meat sauce recipe is a closely guarded secret.

Beansie's Bus in Burlington serves what they call a Michigan. I have no idea if it's authentic or not, but it's good.

Making no judgements about it as I was just passing through, could have (and maybe should) have thrown this in the NSFW thread.

A Coney is (was) a rabbit that lived solely on a couple of barrier islands in Jamaica Bay and along the ocean.

A coney is a hot dog... with chili... mustard and onions.

    Nothing else.

And it most certainly does not have cheese on it.

It was about 15 years ago I was sitting at a Coney Island around town that I actually hate..... but I needed a coney and it was close. A PBS film crew was there filming a documentary about coney islands. It was then and there that I learned Michigan has more coney islands than any other state. According to the crew there were 454 coney islands in Michigan. The closest runner up was New York with 50 ish. I sent the film crew to my favorite Coney Island. Which is also the best Coney Island on earth.

Michigan is the grand champion of coney islands. Period.

I do love this thread. Upstate has so many qualities I wish northern Michigan had.

But I am very serious when it comes to coneys and will not let go of the fact Michigan is the reigning coney champion. Forever.
