yeah, the name is fairly ironic seeing as how phoenix did not so much rise from the ashes as just wallow deep in them….
upstate fact.

Not where we lived....
There was a large group of us that took turns buying the MLB package so we could watch the Sox. One of our group was a shift supervisor at the Bud plant in B-ville. That was an "experimental" brewery so they made a lot of stuff that was never sold retail. I drank a lot of really good beer that had no name or label.

Chicken barbeque most likely. Either via propane set up under the racks or maybe charcoal for the cooking regularly coming down the line with a sprayer and the BBQ sauce. If they were smart they would have a metal table with a bunch of sweet corn stacked on it, covered in canvas and soaked regularly in water. Build a fire under it and let it cook and steam as the day goes on for a good old fashioned drive Chicken dinner- eat in the park or drive through...
Do not have to be upstate for that either (but would probably never work in NYC or many locations down state.) Used to have a similar setup every holiday weekend at a campground we would go to growing up (minus the roof and covered pits.) And then for years a service organization did that once a year as a Zoo fundraiser in the park next to the zoo.

Pretty much every town in VT that has a 4th July thing, and not all do, has a chicken BBQ.

The preference for one team over another in an area without a direct influence is based on where the advertising $$ are spent and what regional cable companies have the contract for what teams. I think if you ask most Upstaters what pro b-ball team they prefer they'd look at you with that 'I really don't give a shit' look then reply with whatever their drunk brother in laws hat had on it last weekend.

CNY is Yankees country. The Mets are trying to make inroads by buying the former Syracuse Chiefs and another minor league team in Binghamton. A lot of pink hat wearing Red Sox fans surfaced in ‘04.

Where I grew up in Upstate NY (Sullivan County) it was definitely more Yankees, but at least 35% Mets

From the article: "The Syracuse-based William G. Pomeroy Foundation, the charity behind those blue roadside historic markers scattered across the state...."
My wife and daughter worked for Pomeroy's company (CXtec) in Syracuse. Usually named in the top 50 medium-sized companies to work for. They've since been bought out and it's not as great a place to work as it once was. They treated my wife extremely well after her cancer diagnosis. Maybe there's a reason for that...
Pomeroy had a terminal prognosis for cancer, went to Switzerland for stem cell treatment, and was 100% cured. My daughter was interning at the company and was tagged with planning the company's 25th anniversary soiree. She found the stem cell donor. He came to the party and Bill was overwhelmed.

Is it a coincidence the Mets' blue matches blue tarps?
Every rooftop tarp is a Mets banner.
