    The Official Argue About Where Upstate NY Is Thread

    Don’t know what your point is? Attica couldn’t handle a riot?

    In 1970, responding in part to the civil rights movement taking place throughout the country, black inmates at Auburn Prison demanded a Black Solidarity Day Observance. When their request was denied, a number of inmates refused to go to work or school on November 4. They took over the main yard and gained control of three cell blocks, the kitchen and mess hall areas. 43 employees were taken hostage, 4 of whom were assaulted. Protesters controlled the public address system in the main yard and made speeches all day. No attempt at escape was made. When Deputy Commissioner Harold Butler told inmates that state troopers were ready to retake the facility using force, they gave up. Warden Harry Fritz agreed to study their grievances and not retaliate. Several of the inmates involved in the protest were transferred immediately to Attica Prison. A year later, many of this same group were involved in the deadly riot at Attica.

    Not that I've seen. I've been through there twice since June on a couple of roads and even said to my wife it was surprising it hasn't happened.

    Just got back from another 3 day 900 mile lap of Upstate with a 400 mile lap east of the river on Monday. I've seen some shit this week Saw some pretty cool shit too, Pumpkinville is going on the list of Upstate special places.

    If WNY snowflakes get a pass then I want a pass for at least the "North Country" region.

    The North Country is north of stuff. That's not really disputable.

    ALL of the disputed areas are more north than NYC and "downstate". So what's your point?

    Holy mother Mary we've been over this. It's all upstate. WNY, CNY, Finger Lakes, North Country, Cap Region, Northern and Mid Hudson Valley, etc. are just subregions of upstate! There are no special snowflakes that escape the upstate label. WNY has Attica and Gasport - Upstate AF. North Country has...well everything Upstate AF. Even Placid is Upstate AF!

    Thank you. It had to be said (again). The way these WNY folks keep trying to deny their upstate-ness is starting to hurt my feelings.

    Saying WNY is upstate is like saying;

    - Stradivarius is a violin maker
    - Mouton Rothschild is a winery
    - The Porsche Carrera GT is a car

    Ok. Maybe that's a stretch. The frenchy part.

    Yeah, there seems to be a split between the culturists and the geographists when it comes to Upstatism.

    Seems ripe for a PhD thesis.

    But Benny says that Washington D.C. is part of the NYC Metro (see page 5 or so), and we established that parts of WNY are basically NE Ohio, but for that buffer territory known as Erie.

    Some here have ceded entire parts of the Upstates to Canada.

    The science is hardly settled.
