I would never insinuate such a thing. The map is getting better with each layer added; but I fear we may be stoking some tribalism among the "upstate" regions.

Thanks, while there is that depressing-ass strip of land known as Erie, PA between Lake Chautauqua and the Western Reserve of Connecticut (otherwise known as Northeast Ohio), It's been my experience that the majority of Chautauqua enthusiasts hail from that state, while only stopping in Erie for the Chick Fil A and to see if the highway is closed across the border due to blizzard conditions.

The upstate line basically goes across upper westchester, cuts off about 1/2-2/3 of rockland. But yeah, you guys are close

Many people in Orange County commute down to the city now, but like, nobody from Sullivan.

this is the dividing line. Westchester is Westchester. Anything north of that is upstate. As someone who grew up in the city, I know that this is the correct answer.

Rockland County is really the only place up for debate, but most of us are mostly unaware that it even exists, so maybe we don't have to debate it.

This is the most truth so far but I just discovered this thread so you all will need to give me a little time to catch up. Not for nothing but most days Rockland FEELS more like a part of the metro area then does Peekskill. Peekskill has a a very upstate-rustbelt-land-that-time-forgot feel to me.

and maybe folks in Western NY don't want to be called upstate, but to someone from the city, you're either in the city, in one of the outer boroughs, on Long Island, in Westchester, or upstate. End of story.

I got some friends that didn't get far, they bought a nice older home in a small city in upstate for 45k
there was a 6 story brick building a few blocks away in great shape that sold for 250k all the lead paint and asbestos you could want, but still

Rockland has Harriman, and if you can step on a rattler or see a bear, you are upstate.

I can't argue about the Western border because like most people from NY, I have never been there.

I think Harriman straddles the Rockland/Orange border. The rattlesnake point is hard to argue against

Ok, fuck, how did this get 6 pages without me seeing it? FKNA. Western NY is defined as where people say "pop", perfectly illustrated in the previous map. Basically Rochester/Dansville west. That shit is Ohio.

You can tell because the bars change. Outsiders wouldn't notice the difference, but it's there. The patrons change from hopeless to oblivious.

That is essentially how you can tell what part of the state you're in:

NYC and suburbs: irrationally proud about being annoying.
Upstate: hopeless outlook
Western NYC: generally oblivious, don't know how bad they have it
Northwest: frozen into solid iceballs. (Watertown)

I'm dead serious btw. Out my back door are empty roads and unlimited miles of gravel for biking (stupid hard hills included). Boating. Wine. Beer. >70's start in May and go through the end of Sept when Oct really shines. It rarely gets above 90. Last two weeks have been super sunny. Look, it ain't perfect of course. Winters can suck when it's cold, but no snow. I'd love me some big mountains, but whatchagonnado? But here's the kicker .... this is a quiet part of the world. I've traveled all over this planet. I work for a company in NJ and normally commute weekly to an apartment. Too many people make this planet ugly. Traffic, pollution, empty buildings, trash, you name it ... it's all so aesthetically depressing. I used to rail on NYS taxes and lack of work and modest cultural value in ROC, and the winter blues, etc. But that shit doesn't bother me in the least anymore as long and I just enjoy the simplicity.

So stay away.

yeah the road riding in the hilly parts of the state is incredible
lots of 11% grades short but painful
there are even places you can ride and an hour goes by and you'd wish to see a car

That's the trade off. I have to commit to commute weekly to a place where I have job in my industry. I feel kinda bad, but covid has really worked out well for me and I could see wfh happening for a LONG time.
