So I spotted an old ski hill between Herkimer and Little Falls: around mile marker 214, south of the thruway. Single lift, chairs still there...

    Anybody know what it was?

That was also Deer Run, not far from Oneonta and Cooperstown.

Ahh right, Shu-maker. That's an interesting little zone that strikes me as a spot that could get solid lake streamers when the wind is right. Its like a funnel to the WNW of there and it sits backed up against a pretty high plateau.

I guess there are rocks sticking out of the ground near there so I could almost go with that. I think of the spot along the BRP where there are rocks sticking up as you're passing the Zoo as a good Upstate preview.

Used to drive between the Cuse and Smallbany every weekend for years...the snow ended right after you went over the hill just past Shoemaker (Shumaker?) headed eastbound. Really surprised nobody ever tried to buy those chairlifts but at this point, they've been idle for 20+ years.

They are right in the sense that they have a NYC logo below the Upstate. That was determined very early on that Upstate is above the NYC city line by quite a bit.

Last night I had to go into the city for a dinner with one of our suppliers. I was out of my element- lots of managers and executives from both companies in a restaurant so nice that I would never enter the place under any other circumstances. Just too nice, too fancy, too expensive. Anyway, I was happy to grab a seat next to my division manager who I get along with but didn’t really get to know until last night. Turns out she is in the process of fixing up a family camp in Downsville. I explained my connection to the area, chatted about Roscoe and Belleayre and Plattekill. So I eventually got around to asking where the line is and she said the Hudson River which I found funny since it totally ignores the east side of the Hudson Valley. I said I had a hard time seeing Rockland as upstate because native Rocklanders are more like Long Islanders or Jerseyites than the upstaters I grew up with. Nobody disputed that but she was like, well Bear Mountain is upstate and route 17 (future I86) is upstate so it’s there someplace. Which is more or less where me and GL put it so, you know, I was right.

y'all know more about the Upstates than I but I still stick to the truism," it aint upstate if you can commute into the city"

I was reminded of this last weekend when I was riding Plattekill with my buddy I worked with in Aspen in the 90s who lives in Nyack now, but grew up in Monroe. His dad was 20+ years NYPD and everyone in his neighborhood was either FDNY or NYPD. They all bought in Monroe so they could commute to those jobs.

He always said he was from New York, people would say "the city?" nah..
    "Upstate? "Nah in between"
So that was ingrained into me for the 30 years we been friends

We discussed this a bit on the drive to and fro and I asked him his Upstate boundary and he said " ya know, up past Ulster County..."
