Try this, get off the Taconic at Miller Hill Rd and head east into the hills and tell me whether what you see is akin to what you expect when you're upstate or if it is more like the NY burbs. I think what will happen is you will find yourself square in that transition zone and as you get into some of the back hollows it turns decidedly Upstate. Dutchess County is even more of a conundrum with mature coastal suburban looking neighborhoods but with deep connections to the rotting old trailer out back with a scrap pile partially covered by weathered tarps crowd.

I humbly submit a new metric for your consideration. Please have a seat and read on.
I was traveling the great highway system in our fine state for many hours yesterday and noticed something that had somehow escaped my hawk-like powers of observation over the last 50 years. The day was grey and in the 30's. In other words, perfect upstate weather. There was the fine mist of salt spray in the road, kicked up by the cars ahead. In fact, it was just the right amount to coat the windshield and dry instantly which then required gallons/mile of windshield washer fluid to simply be able to see the road ahead. But here's the crux ... despite (or maybe because of) these conditions, in the upstate specifically, every other driver was undetered and rocking the window-down, cig in hand, knit hat, parka on.
And then .... magically .... just as the monarch butterflies leave every fall to overwinter in Mexico, I hit the PA border and the windows were rolled up tight. No shit, or as m2711c might say .... fact.

Quite true. Additionally, Rush was also there for moe when they started drinking.
Though their particular stew grew perhaps more out of a twisted mix of Bowie, the Dead, Zappa and jazz. And UC and splits. Lots and lots of UC and splits.
Why do you think their songs usually only get about a minute thirty in before a big sound change? That’s the typical time it takes to slam a split, huck it at something, and move on to another topic.
Some of you will think I’m joking.

We found a couple of food gems in the foodie wasteland otherwise known as the Greater Monticello Degraded Zone. My wife had a booth at the Holiday Lights Festival at Bethel Woods so we stayed at the casino but their restaurants kinda suck so we go exploring and we usually fail but this weekend we found the Miss Monticello diner and The Local Table and Tap in Lake Kauneonga (sp?).
The diner kicks ass, cheap and great portions with $5.50 Roscoe Brewing Co Amber. The old downtown is literally falling apart but they are trying, the diversity in the population is as wide as anywhere in the state and they have Beer World. There's definite potential. After a long stretch of marginal to poor diner experiences this place blew it out of the water for breakfast and dinner.
So, we know that there are some pretty dead economic zones with mostly shuttered towns and falling down old resort hotels all over this area and then you come into this tiny crossroads village that's noticeably nicer than the others. There are a few spots but the Table and Tap is a gem that needs to be visited. The menu is wonderfully eclectic, I don't think I've ever seen bulgogi beef tacos before so I had to have them. Fuckin' good! If you go to see a show at Bethel Woods this place is 3 miles away on old back roads and ya gotta go.

Is that considered an upgrade from the standard lettuce wrap?

We have to drive through that area twice next weekend on another cross-state, pick up the kid, trip so we'll stop here and try some more goodies. I need any ideas for something for lunch, maybe in Syracuse, on the way up Saturday. I know there's that cool downtown neighborhood with a few breweries, is there a favorite must go to spot there?

I was at a Cheech and Chong viewing party in Eugene once, and a bunch of dogs got into the chocolate weed brownies. They farted so bad we gave up and sat outside to drink beers. Because of my olfactory impairment, I was one of the last to be driven out. It's bad if I can't stand it.
