In college I had a friend that made a bong out of an old glass Aunt Jemima bottle. It was great. the bowl sat right where her hands clasped together over here apron.

When is Notre Dame going to get rid of the fighting irish mascot? How dare they insuate that irish people are violent. As someone of Irish/Jamaican/German descent I'm very offended.

Should I be also offended that a black woman was used as a mascot for flavored high fructose corn syrup? Type 2 diabetes does spans multiple ethnic groups and no one on the Jamaican side of my family has diabetes as far as I know. How dare they!

When I was a wee lad, there was a chain of family restaurants in Oregon and California (elsewhere?) called Lil' Black Sambos.

The decor, menu etc was based on the children's story of how a South Asian kid outwitted some tigers https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_St...le_Black_Sambo

But people started associating the name with rascist slurs.

Somewhere in the late 1970s the name was changed to Sambos. Then they filed BK.

You're right. The proper name should be the Drunkin' Irish.

"Sambo" is racist. Always has been and that book was racist:

Sambo or Zambo is a derogatory term used for a person with Indigenous American origin and, in some countries, also mixed with African origin. In an eighteenth-century Mexican casta painting by Ignacio Maria Barreda, zambo is a synonym for lobo.

there was one left in LA until last week.

THE LAST REMAINING SAMBO’S FINALLY ERASES ITS NAME

^^ Wow, that's surprising that there were any left. I thought Sambo's was gone 40 years ago due to the racist attachment. I am absolutely shocked any remained.

When I was growing up during the 70's in the O.C., a neighbor had a black Labrador retriever named Sambo.

All the adults would snicker and laugh, us kids had no friggin' idea.

Different time and place, that's for sure.

Denver used to have 'The White Spot' which seemed to be unintentionally inviting the wrong type of crowd.

Ha! You beat me to it. We ate at Sambos when I was a kid. They made that black child look way too much like a monkey, even an 8 year knew that shit was wrong

Add- just read the wiki. Lincoln City was the location we went to

I see your Sambo and raise you....Nigger was a male black labrador retriever belonging to Wing Commander Guy Gibson of the Royal Air Force, and the mascot of No. 617 Squadron. Of Dambusters fame if you know any WWII history.

A friend and I washed dishes on the graveyard shift for a summer at the Sambos in Hyannis (Cape Cod). That was quite an experience. Our manager was this guy from Tennessee, I can still hear him yelling about the gol-durn defective whipped cream cans. "A whole brand-new case and none of them work!"

They weren't actually defective, we were doing whippets in the walk-in. We thought that was pretty funny. I don't think that place lasted a year

I honestly never once in my life looked at a box of Uncle Bens and thought "wow thats racist". I just thought it was a dude who knew how to grow some mean rice. Just read today that apparently Southern Whites used the words "uncle" and "aunt" referring to blacks instead of "mr" or "mrs". Never knew that, growing up a yankee and all. The syrup lady, well it always seemed a bit off to me.

    Odd times for sure.

Fun fact: Chef Boyardee is not an arbitrary corporate mascot. He was the actual founder of the company.
