Rear wheel noise(s)
At the end of my ride tonight I noticed that while pedaling I was getting a little flapping sound - as though I was flexing the wheel or the crank and causing some mild rubbing.
I was close to the truck so waited until I got there to try to diagnose. Everything seemed to be tight - no play in the cassette, rear rotor, brakes, crank, derailleur, etc. However, when I squeeze my rear brake hard and Rick my bike forward and backward I can hear the spokes pinging. I checked tension by squeezing pairs of spokes but nothing is obvious.
Take it to the shop? Ride it until it breaks? WWMD?

Thanks,

In my limited experience with bladed spokes, they were prone to pinging, usually when grabbing a fistful of brake. Whether that was inherent to the spokes or just that particular wheel build, I don't know.

tighten all spokes 1/2 turn?
Brake bolts all tight?
freehub/pawls/axle all lubed

Spoke tension was where I was going also, but not sure. Might take the wheel into a shop to have them check.
I checked brake bolts at the truck, but have been thinking that the hubs might need a lube.

You sure it's the spokes pinging and not the brake pads rocking back and forth in the caliper? My Zees with the heat sink pads are really noisy from this.
Was the "flapping" sound periodic? If so, did it match the period of the wheel(s), or the crank?kittyhump.com - Fund Max, Cat Appreciation, Bike

Yes, definitely spokes.
The flapping was periodic and matched the drivetrain - went away/lessened when I stopped pedaling hard.

So...I took the rear wheel off tonight and the cassette lockring fell onto the floor. It's a garbaruk cassette, so the cassette is still tight onto the freehub body but the threads that the lockring screwed into came off with the lockring. It's possible that I over torqued it, but I used a torque wrench. I think it's also possible that while pedaling really hard I shifted into my highest gear and for a split second the chain bound between the lockring and chainstay then the force twisted the lockring right off.
Going to take the wheel in to have it looked at. Even with the lockring in place the chain was rubbing on the inside of the chainstay. I need some help getting the cassette off and now is as good a time as any to get the wheel trued.
Anybody have an XD cassette for sale?

Okay, here's another question - what purpose does the lockring serve on the Garbaruk cassette? The cassette tightens onto the XD driver by itself. Does it just take the load from the frame as you tighten the through axle?
Asked another way, can I just run this cassette without the lockring (or maybe with it in place but not tight) or am I gonna die?
