Attn Washing Machine dentists
Got a 2003 Kenmore 417.42042100 front loader. Lowish miles but hey it’s 17 yrs old. The hi speed spin cycle recently got slow and noisy; pulled the back of the cabinet off and the bearings seem fine, you can feel a piece of something (corroded spider arm I’m 99% sure) scraping between the inner and outer tub during rotation.
Ok fine, spider arms are generally $100 or so, I’ve got time these days and like fixing shit rather than throwing it away. But if I understand the part diagram correctly ( https://www.genuinereplacementparts....BoCnEIQAvD_BwE ) the spider arm on this model is integrated with the entire stainless tub. So $550 with shipping. Still less than a decent front loader, but if I tore it all apart I’d probably want to replace wear items too right? Just bearings?

Clearly one of the crossbeams has gone out askew on the treadle.

Wacky timing. I am having a very similar issue on a similar aged Kenmore, but not that model. My wife has decided that it's not worth the time and I think she's right, but the one she ordered is a couple weeks out. So I watch with some interest.
Taken any pics?

Have you checked the specs on the end line for the ...rotary ...girder?

In our case what's stuck between the inner and outer tubs some of the hardware my wife likes to leave in her pockets when she throws them in the wash.

Actually we had a thread here in which some appliance repair gurus laid down some deep shit man.
If you spent more time here you’d know this.

I do spend more time here which is why I know there are online forums for everything so why ask some guys who should not be allowed to own tools questions about specific things when you could go to a more specific on-line source ?

Can't you get a decent front loader for $6-700 ? Seems like throwing $500 in parts at a 15 year old unit is questionable. This is coming from a guy who tries to fix $10 items regularly. Do you have any used appliance places in your area ? Sometimes they sell salvaged parts like a car dismantled.
