Help plan road trip from Park City-Aspen-Coral Gables

In August, I will drive from P.C. to Coral Gables via Aspen and Independence Pass. From there, I can either head south and stop over in Sante Fe, and then Dallas, Jackson, Mobile, etc. or head back onto I-80 and stop over in Nashville, and on to Macon, etc. (I know the ride threats CO., KS and MO. is as boring as can be, but Sante Fe to Shreveport is prolly no better.

I've done the Nashville route before. Also, I have done the trip via Amarillo and New Orleans.
This trip, my main goal is Independence Pass in August.

    Route and stopping suggestions please.

If you've done Nashville, do Memphis this time. Graceland, Sun studios, Beale Street, Civil Rights museum, Stax records museum. If any of that is open and safe.

If bringing a MTB, Arkansas has some great trails as you head towards Memphis, then south to the coast and over

    It’s a wet heat, he’ll be fine.

Do gulf coast the entire way hug US90 and US 98 the whole way after NOLA.

I did that US 90 trip and loved it. I don't mind the heat. Memphis sounds great, because I can go thru MO and the Ozark National Forest

Also, from Memphis, I could head east and travel thru Muscle Shoals

I guess, it comes down to how much do I want to visit Sante Fe.

The route on your map spends WAY too much time in Alabama for my tastes.

The route that goes through AL goes right by a dreamland BBQ. Worth a stop. Mmmmmm.

As always, we have an excellent thread on the topic. Road tripping the south in search of BBQ:

From a post of mine in there: Garden and Gun’s bbq road trip through Western TN; straight food porn.

Right? Don’t listen to the haters. The drive through Talladega National Forest and Alabama lake country is outstanding.

As I said in the thread above. There’s something fantastic about a road trip through the rural south. Beautiful drives, much through places that are frozen in time, much through places that time passed by, rotting away beautifully under Spanish moss and sunshine. The smell of actual wood-fired bbq pits and catfish frys fill the air. Some of the nicest people in the world too along the way; all too happy to show you their little town or roadside shack that sells “the best cookin you’ve ever had”.

I’m jealous, been too long since I’ve done a road trip as long as yours, Schindler.

To memory I think there is a corvette museum in Tupelo off 78 that's pretty interesting. If you play golf there's a shitload between birmingham/montgomery over to GA. Something golf trail (bobby jones?) but I can't remember. as others have said, it is misrable hot that time-period. you won't be doing shit between 11 AM and 6 PM but sweating your ass off. Unless yoiu are sitting on a beach.

there's a lot to be said for hitting say destin/miramar, Panama city, and cape san blas beaches. then around to clearwater. St George ok but I prefer cape san blas. of all of them Siesta Key is the tits. period. AnnaMaria island pretty cool but Siesta, that is IT for the state of FL outside key West.

Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail. 11 sweet courses that can be had for cheap during that time of year because, hot.

X2 on MT’s itinerary. Stop along 30a while you’re on that road anyway for a night or two. Sugar sand beaches and Caribbean water.

X3 on 30a area. so good and laid back. Red Bar in Grayton Beach (if opened again, burnt down in 2019) WAS a great cash only dive bar. Time moves a bit slower along that coast.

You know, be like Malcolm X

and have a big prick, too

The great thing about this trip is that we have nothing but time. I think that we will leave on Aug. 10 and classes don't start (hopefully) until Aug. 20. Lots of options.

Going South out of Granite after Indy Pass, stay on 285 going South out of Salida, then veer off towards Del Norte and up over Wolf Creek Pass down into Pagosa Springs. Lots of good food there and the hot springs, which will hopefully be open.

Then head down 84 to 64, through Chama and over to Tres Piedras. There's something super cool about that section of road, winding up grassy savannahs into copses of Pine and clusters of lakes. Very remote and high, unique, atmospheric and gorgeous.

Stay on 64 and a few miles before you cross the Rio Grande gorge, you'll pass the Earthship compound where Ram Dass hangs out sometimes. Checking out those domiciles is very cool.

Drive a couple of miles to walk the Rio Grande Gorge bridge.

A couple more miles and you're in Taos. Or turn South to Santa Fe.

I usually dirtbag it at the Abominable Snowmansion with a good bar and Mex restaurant next door in Arroyo Seco, on the way from Taos to Taos Ski Valley. Lots of high end boutique hotels all over from Taos to Santa Fe.

Buster always has the best road trip advice. Knowing that terrain well, I can say he hasn't steered you wrong. But it will take you hours out of your way.

AnnaMaria Island huh? I lived in Bradenton Beach in 87-88 and man, that was where all the white crackheads lived. There and Cortez. Because Oneco was full on urban warfare. Handful of murders in the 6mos I was there within a block of my apartment on BB. Some woman killed (kilt) her husband with a freaking shovel. I left and never looked back. I hear its had some gentrification since then.

Buster: This sounds really good. Thanks!
It seems that it only turns a 39 hr. trip into a 40-41 trip (where and when I stop may add a lot of time though)

that is my neck of the woods. Could you be more specific on good food in Pagosa. that is a nice loop but involves some backtracking from Independence pass. My only trip in summer to Aspen could not find a parking space. Would do that loop by doing Ouray, Red Mountain Pass, Silverton, than Pagosa.

My last slow roll through the South using nothing but US and State Routes from Hilton Head - Chas - Asheville - Nashville - Birmingham - 30A then back to ATL six and a half years ago (pre kid) was incident and attitude free. I’m white as everyone else here and I was shown the “good spots” by locals, some white, mostly black. We listened to blues at some shack south of Murfreesboro, TN and my wife and I were the only white people in sight. They treated us like family and we treated them and everyone else the same. The golden rule still applies no matter where you are.
