Owwie
I crashed on my mountain bike this morning. Broken radius and my entire hand is dislocated from the ulna. Urgent care told me to go to hospital for emergency surgery. So here I sit in the er waiting room. 6ft from anyone

No surgery for now. They are going to just force everything back in place and send me home with a splint. Should not hurt at alll. !?!?!?!

My advice is go see Dr. Viola at Steadman-Hawkins in Frisco or Vail. They take most insurance. It is worth the extra hassle, IMO. I crushed my finger in a mt bike crash some 8 years ago, local doc did initial surgery and did it fine, but after wondering about the level of expert care I was getting, I went for a second opinion with him and was glad I did."fuck off you asshat gaper shit for brains fucktard wanker." - Jesus Christ

Yikes, I blew up my right arm last September, double open compound fracture, radius and ulna. ambulance from the clinic to Montrose for immediate surgery. Get tons of rest and don't push it.. let the body heal! You'll be back at it soon enough!

I know him very well. He did three arm surgeries on my wife. I have an ortho appt tomorrow with the hand specialist in the group I usually go to. If I need second opinion I might reach out to him. Originally Posted by Danno

I had something similar about 15 yrs ago but it was a shattered wrist, and the hand was pushed back an inch down the arm. Doc at the clinic in Whistler put a tourniquet on, juiced the arm up with local anesthetic and then gave the hand a good tug to straighten it out. I didn't feel a thing. That was, until he put a plaster cast on it and then the arm swelled up over night. That was excruciating. When I got to see the ortho surgeon a couple days later I had him cut the cast open. Got some nice hardware installed. Wrist has been good as new ever since.

Mine was opposite dislocation. Yours is what they normally see. Hand pushed up and back. My hand went down. Doc was trying to figure how I could land on the back of my hand. I think I was still holding the handlebars when I hit the dirt.

Keep us posted on your treatment. I had distal radius fx about 30 years ago in a bunch sprint pile up. Hand displaced up and about 15* outward. No fixation required. Will be interesting to see how orthos are treating things now.

Highly recommend Dorf at VSO as well. Grew up in the Vail valley, badass mtb-er and athlete in general. Sounds like you already have a plan, but just in case

I need surgery. Ortho said there were too many bone fragments for the wrist to heal properly. He has to put plate in for stability. He has a couple different options depending on what he see’s when he goes in.
He’s a competitive cyclist and sees this kind of injury every week from mountain bikers and dirt bikers.
Now my problem is how to afford this as I don’t have insurance and previous employer is f’n around with cobra.

Electing Cobra isn't something that should be negotiable or optional to the employer. They are required to provide you documents in a specific time, as long as you complete and return them in the required time limit you should be ok.

I managed to get urgent processing of cobra. I’ll be covered in time. I problem I was dealing with was providers couldn’t process the unavailable insurance and were only giving me a self pay option. They wouldn’t give me the insurance rate and told me I would be stuck with the difference when cobra became available.
Such a stupid game these providers play

I dunno, they all looked pretty gruesome to me. I hope they re-aligned that before sending you home from ER
When do you get cut?
FWIW, I broke the other wrist about 10 years ago due to skiing into some snow-covered rocks. "After" xray below - it was well-shattered.
Rehab on the plate/screw repair was much easier and less time to back-on-bike than the one I described earlier where Dr just reduced/casted.
So see if you get more metal than this
