Atomic brings back Volant as a premium brand
I just saw that Atomic is bringing back Volant skis as a premium brand and touting the patent on steel ski tops. Have your name embossed on your skis and be part of the Bogner crowd with limited run, hand made skis...

It makes me sad.

This will be a very popular ski for the Austrian hip swiveling crowd. I can se it competing with the likes of Stockli and Kaestle carvers

This gives me a Chubb-y
But if they don’t make a spatula and machete it’s a sin. . .

Isn’t that what Volant was as a brand? Hip swivellers and people worried their skis looked bad (selling point of less topsheet damage with steel).
the machete and more so Spatula didn’t sell well at the time iirc.

Did I miss something? Volant sold to Amer Sport years ago, Atomic has been producing them as a Gucci brand for probably fifteen years.
The spatula was the greatest idea they ever had: already bent, right out of the factory, so you don’t have to feel bad about doing it the first time you hit a bump.

The Machete is one of my favorite skis of all time. Crazy damp, you could point them straight into a chunder field and not spill a drop of your beer. Heavy, yes, but skiing something that stable and unflappable was so damn fun. Carved like a mo fo, too

Looks like the longest ski will be 182 and the fattest waist 78 mm. That pretty much sums up the market.

I worked at a shop that sold a good volume of Volants. I hated when the sales guys sold them. They were a pain in the ass to drill compared to other skis that skied as well or better. And then they would hit something, bend them, and bring them in for warranty meaning I got to drill a second or even third set.

I was that guy that sold those. I worked in a slope side shop and we did demos as well.
They were so silly easy to sell. “Here you go ma’am, try these out. Don’t worry about carrying them back, just have your husband put them in the car, and I’ll charge your card.” The Powerkarve and Vertex Powerkarve were like a license to print money. I sold every one I could get my hands on. For full points. No sales pricing required.
But I also sent a lot back. We were really close with our rep(Gordie i think) and he just told us to send them back and they would replace them. No receipts, no RA, nothing. Just put them in a box and pull a pair off the wall.
I was personally responsible for about a dozen pairs. After the third pair of McG’s I pranged, I stopped skiing on them.
