Highlands Bowl Slide
Can’t imagine what these people where thinking. 16 new, heavy wind on top of hard bed surface. A pocket released while being skied. No one hurt but this could have propagated across the entire bowl.
Pitkin county sent out a warning last night, CAIC said considerable in the aspen zone. Bowl has not been mitigated since mid March.
Nice work out there. Pull you fucking head out of your assess.

Just a reminder from the 3/31/84 slide that killed three patrollers, just to skiers right of where the slide popped today. They were bombing that day and had bombed the bowl in days/weeks previously (unlike the last month now), and it slid massively.

Highlands patrol really does a spectacular job of making and keeping that terrain safe

And now a full mea culpa from Paul, who was caught yesterday. Big props to him for stepping forward and setting a good example:

Sure looks like there's also a ski track and slide in the five fingers today.
Fricken crazy!

Highlands Bowl Slide
I chatted with colleague this week who was up in the bowl when this happened. Two disappointing takeaways:
1) there were indeed some big local names up there that day, choosing to ski the consequential terrain. I’d be curious to see what they have to say and if they’ll ever follow up publicly about their decision making.
2) My colleague was hiking up top when the main slide ripped, but said they also saw a big point release in Boxcar, a slide in G4 (that ripped 30min after they transitioned underneath the path), along with the small slide in G2 and other pockets noticeably touchy. They never intended to ski steeper terrain like G8 or Ozone, and got one lap in G4/5 before getting spooked out by the general instability.
I asked him if he’d still go back and ski in the bowl that day, knowing what we know now and having seen the instability. He responded with a adamant yes, gushing how “the powder was SOOO good!” That mentality leaves a bad taste in my mouth, even if we weren’t living/recreating with COVID and it’s implications.
