    ZOOM Wackiness

During the past 48 hours, I have attended a wedding, a funeral and a family get together involving at least 6 countries via ZOOM. I do not recommend it.

I organized and threw a 5th birthday party over Zoom. The noise and chaos simulated an actual birthday party of 5 year olds pretty well.

    It was almost not sad.

How come all I ever hear about anymore is Zoom. What happened to Skype?

I thought Skype died a decade ago. I hear about it occasionally but just occasionally. Who owns it now?

Skype was a bit behind the times as a multi person video conference call platform. Cisco WebEx is the industry leader that Zoom is trying to ape. And Microsoft has added more video conferencing capabilities to Teams - but Teams is really more of a rip-off of Slack.

skype has been supplanted by facetime and whatsapp, at least as far as person to person video calling, from what I see. All the apple peeps use facetime, non-apple people use whatsapp.

zoom seems to be the party platform. At work we use Teams.

yeah, maybe, I didn't start video conferencing until quite recently; before that it was all person to person.

The features are still there, but it's clunky compared to WebEx, Zoom, etc. Skype seems to be more popular as an enterprise always-on IM application.

Skype is a a Microsoft product now. They have Skype and Skype for Business and they are discontinuing it (in name at least) and moving video and telephone technology all over to Teams and part of Office 365 (soon to be renamed for some of the packages to Microsoft 365)...

They are still updating it and are also now allowing Teams to be used for free (with some limitations of course)...

Did a dr. appt by Zoom a week or two ago. Got an all day online class coming up Friday and we'll be using Bluejeans. Never heard of it.
I like Signal for phone encryption and the ability to facetime android to iphone.

I'm very impressed with Teams, we use it for a daily meeting in my group at my new job. I do have to agree that Skype has gone downhill over the last decade. Webex is alright, and I am fortunate enough to have never touched the POS that is Zoom.

Been using Zoom daily since the shut down. I haven’t been so lucky, but some colleagues got Zoombombed a couple weeks ago. Some unknown attendee showed up, took over screen share and started showing porn. Guess it was an easy target before they got wise and locked everything down and started requiring passwords.

Also been using it for happy hours with friends. I like it for work, for socializing it’s...better than nothing I guess.
Remind me. We'll send him a red cap and a Speedo.

A ski buddy of mine is a lead developer at Zoom. He said they have hard to increase their server capacity by 20x over the last month.

Good times for state legislators. Wait until John Gacys ghost shows up at a kids birthday party.

Teams is pretty good, but goddamn it is a distraction factory even with most of the notifications turned off. It's like having your team standing in your office all day.

Did a one year old Bday party and will be doing a 3 yo bday party on zoom. Lots of teleconferencing going on these days.

I'm taking yoga from a Seattle studio via Zoom. Works pretty well and I like the interaction. Much better than a static YouTube video or DVD.

I’ve been on a ton of zoom calls lately, even before covid. My company has a lot of older guys on the sales force as well as in senior management. The execs aren’t adept enough to do the group mute/unmute successfully and the older sales guys are even worse so it’s like conducting a meeting in a bar at happy hour. So much background noise and overheard side conversations. The best is when you can tell that somebody is cooking dinner or yelling at their kids while the meeting continues. It’s glorious
