    RIP John Prine

What a wonderful soul he was. "Sam Stone" and "Angel From Montgomery" are my favorites. A sad day, and there are many more to come.

I just saw that in the rat flu thread. What a bummer. There was a guy who got it and even better, could express it. This isn't his best tune, but it is the first cut on his first album and I like to think it set the tone a bit for things to come.

Prophetic. Or just accepting death since he already had lung cancer.

Gonna smoke a cigarette nine miles long.

Illegal smile was his first song?

Track 1, first album. I'm sure he recorded plenty of other stuff earlier here and there as he got going.

Wow, for some unknown reason I never connected John Prine with “Angel from Montgomery”, even though it has been a long time favorite of mine. I guess I thought Bonnie Raitt came up with that on her own. Now that you mention it, I can hear his voice in that song. Damn shame he’s gone.

I told my daughter the happy enchilada story when he was first reported to be in the hospital, and played her the song. The next day, she was walking around the house singing the song. Warmed my heart, and we played a few things on YouTube.

RIP to one of the greats.

He and his wife had a house here in Gulfport, FL. The whole community was out on Monday evening on their porches singing his songs.
