An incredible songwriter and storyteller. I grew up listening to Prine as he was one of my dads favorites, which became one of my favorites.

A few that can turn back time to a 10 year old cruising with his pops:

    Ain’t hurting nobody
    Lake Marie

A later favorite, Spanish Pipe Dream

    Rest easy John.

JP crossed lots of lines with his music. Revered by many of the greats with his songwriting skills.

My daughter, 28, stumbled onto him a few years ago, and a few months ago saw him in Asheville, NC.
In order to properly convert this thread to a polyasshat thread to more fully enrage the liberal left frequenting here...... (insert latest democratic blunder of your choice).

John Prine is one of my top 2-3 musical hereos in my life. Music is a huge part of my life and I can honestly say this fucking crushed me. I cried more than once. Maybe it's just the stress of this COVID shit mixed in but man alive it hurt.

There is no one song or record that explains John Prine. You can't turn someone on to John Prine. Either you get it or you don't. That man will never be replicated.

I had the good fortune to sit front row at a Prine show about 6 months ago, he said, "how you doin" to me, to me!!!!!! One of the greatest nights of my life and definitely one of the best shows I've ever seen. They played for an hour and the band went on break, John being 73 needs to rest. Nope, he stayed up and played solo for the next 45 minutes. The band slowly appeared back one at a time during Hello in there starting with the bass then guitar then drums. I melted.

RIP Mr Prine. You made the world a much better place, one pork chop at a time.

I watched/listened to most of the songs in this thread, but can't say I am impressed. Too country for my taste, but I have a particular dislike for most country, so there is that.

    ...and no, nothing like Dylan.

I agree it is a constitutional right for Americans to be assholes...its just too bad that so many take the opportunity...

I really can relate to this. In recent years however I have made inroads. Bands like Drive by Truckers, Wilco, Avett brothers, even Kacey Musgraves who is an outspoken progressive have sucked me in. Also bluegrass bands like the Stringdusters who use the slide guitar a ton. Dixie Chicks...the wife and daughter are huge fans....they aren't really my thing but what is not to like when the girls are rocking out to them?!

On the other hand Old Crow Medicine show just felt too country and popish when I saw them live. And the crowd felt too country, it made me squeamish. I saw Kacey at a small music festival, and the crowd was the same way, but then she has zero issue speaking her mind right to them. Her music is definitely pretty one dimensional though.

An old friend turned me on to John Prine close to 20 years ago. Also that friend could be the guy in half his songs...which is pretty funny. I liked him immediately. Also like what he and Fiona stand for. Good people. Check out Fiona Whelan Prine (@FionaPrine): https://twitter.com/FionaPrine?s=09

Excellent interview with Prine that Marc Maron grabbed out of his archives from 2016.

I can definitely understand that you don't like the country twang.
To me he was a poet more than a musician. He had an amazingly evocative way of describing the lives of those quietly suffering souls out there - old folks, prisoners, battered women, vets with PTSD, people uprooted by greed, the list goes on.

No he's not like Dylan with the mind-bending metaphors. Prine's words are more direct, with a turn of cadence and a sense of humor or irony in the human condition. Different but great in their own ways.

"Prine's stuff is pure Proustian existentialism. Midwestern mindtrips to the nth degree. And he writes beautiful songs. I remember when Kris Kristofferson first brought him on the scene. All that stuff about Sam Stone the soldier junky daddy and Donald and Lydia, where people make love from ten miles away. Nobody but Prine could write like that."

Wow. Cool tribute from the master poet.

Sam Stone is some powerful shit.

    Sam stone came home,
    to the wife and family
after serving in the conflict overseas.
and the time that he served,
    had shattered all his nerves,
and left a little shrapnel in his knees.
but the morhpine eased the pain,
and the grass grew round his brain,
and gave him all the confidence he lacked,
with a purple heart and a monkey on his back.

There's a hole in daddy's arm where all the money goes,
jesus christ died for nothin i suppose.
    little pitchers have big ears,
don't stop to count the years,
sweet songs never last too long on broken radios.

    Sam stone's welcome home
    didn't last too long.
he went to work when he'd spent his last dime
and soon he took to stealing
when he got that empty feeling
for a hundred dollar habit without overtime.
and the gold roared through his veins
    like a thousand railroad trains,
and eased his mind in the hours that he chose,
while the kids ran around wearin' other peoples' clothes...

There's a hole in daddy's arm where all the money goes,
jesus christ died for nothin i suppose.
    little pitchers have big ears,
don't stop to count the years,
sweet songs never last too long on broken radios.

    Sam stone was alone
when he popped his last balloon,
climbing walls while sitting in a chair.
well, he played his last request,
while the room smelled just like death,
with an overdose hovering in the air.
but life had lost it's fun,
there was nothing to be done,
but trade his house that he bought on the gi bill,
    for a flag-draped casket on a local hero's hill.

There's a hole in daddy's arm where all the money goes,
jesus christ died for nothin i suppose.
    little pitchers have big ears,
don't stop to count the years,
sweet songs never last too long on broken radios.
    . . .

OK, but why do you think it’s important to say this now?

I prefer to listen to Russian Circles and Run The Jewels but it’s easy to recognize and respect a brilliant songwriter like Prine, even if the genre isn’t in your wheelhouse.

His passing, at this time, although sad, seems apropos. To me, much of his music was a lament, sung with a wry smile. Finding the beauty in the troughs of life. Perfectly suited to these strange times. RIP

Good links gentlemen, keep 'em coming.
