There was a radio DJ in New Haven Ct in the 70s and early 80s, "Stoneman," who would sign off his show each night on WPLR with the refrain of "Illegal Smile"- made me a fan before I knew who John Prine was:

And you may see me tonight with an illegal smile
It don't cost very much, but it lasts a long while
Won't you please tell the man I didn't kill anyone
No I'm just tryin' to have me some fun

The "Sequestered Songwriters" Facebook page just did a live collaborative tribute to Prine. Pretty cool idea, and a couple nugs in there.

"Before you make your own Handsome Johnny, make sure you have the right vodka. Prine said he used red label Smirnoff vodka, not blue label. “If you get too good of vodka, it kills the bubbles,” Prine cautioned.

The brand of ginger ale doesn’t matter, but it should be a diet version. Not only is normal ginger ale too sweet, according to Prine, but “you don’t want to get diabetes from drinking.”

I disagree...I have seen amazing musicians absolutely kill with songs they have never played before, by ear or otherwise.

This. I didn't find your comment disrespectful at all. Music is subjective. People get really provincial about music they love.

He's not required to like him of course but I'd have to agree with Rideski that a thread about someone dying isn't the best place to air that opinion. Poor form in my view.

If it was Trump I'd have a different take.

Posting on any thread, like for example a fly fishing thread, or a K2 thread, any thread where folks come to share their thoughts on things they like, just to say you don't like x,y,z, is just hater being hater thing. It says way more about the poster than any merit their opinion may have and just lost.

And, I've never heard Prine called country before.

    Carry on.

As the musicians I like get older more and more of them have lyrics sheets, for their own songs.

Margo Price with a piece discussing covids harsh impact on her family, John Prine, and lying politicians. She's such a gem.

    Hah!

Sturgill Simpson joined Isbell in calling out the show for not mentioning Prine. “Don’t get it twisted…wouldn’t be caught dead at this tacky ass glitter and botox cake & cock pony show even if my chair had a morphine drip,” Simpson wrote, in a post viewed by Pitchfork that has since been deleted. “I just wanted to see if they would say his name but nope.”

That's okay, the metaphorical flag decal they were displaying by not mentioning Prine's death from COVID won't get them into Heaven anymore. Thanks to the actions the kind of the people who support an organization like the CMA over the last 9 months, it's getting overcrowded up there.

Nice write up in the drake though
His abilities and respect for seem to resonate with people who related to his message and style
    Fuckin virus is badass
I feel it needed to take him out before he could write a great song about it

It was a shame they didn't honor Mr Prine, he was a troubadour's troubadour, but it is a fucking CRIME they didnt honor Billy Joe Shaver. I mean he was country music personified. CMA can tongue my balloon knot.

Another reason I love Jason Isbell right there in that article.
