I've got an 870 that's been rock solid but it's also 25 years old. No idea on the quality of the new ones. Never had a jamming issue like my friends 11-87. Also never had an issue with being able to pump it quickly. I've put thousands of shells down range for sporting clays and skeet. Always felt great to out shoot the guys that show up at the range with their $5,000 custom fit shotguns.
Been a while since I've shot on a regular basis, checking supplies I realized I'm low on shot. Still got a lot of powder, primers, wads, and empty shells. Might have to improvise.

OP, all these recommendations are pedestrian mass produced junk befitting a beer-drinking hillbilly. I would recommend going with something bespoke made by real craftsmen, such as a Purdey side by side or Holland & Holland Royal series. Whether shooting fowl or a masked intruder in the night, a bespoke firearm signifies you are a person of discerning taste. If you must, stoop no lower than a Benelli.

Get a loud mouth dog before a shotgun.

Get a mossberg, Remington is now crap. If you can find an older Remington wingmaster they are gold though.

I believe if you are carrying a Holland and Holland, you get waived right past the Yellowstone Club gates.

Given that you can't say what you'll be shooting with it, my advice would be the same as I would give to a guy using a shovel for the first time, know which is the business end. Other than that, buy the gun that looks cool.

Honesty, for the recreational shooter, occasional wing shooter, and HD,
https://www.academy.com/shop/pdp/mos...-gauge-shotgun
buy this and don't listen to much other bullshit. This will work and go bang when you need it to.
You get a HD short barrel good for slugs and 00 buck, nad a field barrel for all game hunting.
Also, relevant:

Quit dicking around with the shotgun.
Get a chopper
Cheap ammo and will last forever with the added benefit of clearing a room capabilities.

You've never owned a gun, and never hunted. So, just man up and say I want a shotgun for personal defense.
I have a few shotguns, several for hunting, several for tactical purposes. You need something simple, with an 18.5" barrel. Pump or semi auto. Keep it under $500. Order of choice, Benelli Nova, Remington 870, Mossberg 500.
Semi Auto's are a little more pricey. Again, order of preference, Benelli, Remington Mossberg. Probably in the $1,000 range, give or take.
If you want something in a smaller package, consider the Remington Tac-14 or the Mossberg Shockwave. You can get these in 12 or 20. I have the Remington Tac 14 in 20 gauge that is pretty neat. Add Aguilla short shot-shells for more capacity.
My suggestion would be in this order. In order to properly convert this thread to a polyasshat thread to more fully enrage the liberal left frequenting here...... (insert latest democratic blunder of your choice).

I run mossberg and 870 pumps, like them both.
So far had good luck with both.
I like the safety of the mossberg a little better.
Go to a shop and get the fondle everything they have.
It's a shotgun. No need to overthink it - especially given OP's lack of specific purpose.

They get willfully programmed by gun industry propaganda.
Which is another reason I wouldn't buy a gun. That is what your money goes towards. They should be forced to do PSA's like the tobacco industry did.
"Hey kids, just remember: shooting your classmates in the face is for chumps!"
But no, they've only been encouraging fear and paranoia and vigilantism.
