Wishing death on another mag? Chill the fuck out. Seriously. The hate spewing from people I otherwise like and trust is disgusting and scary. I'm calling you out on this BECAUSE I know you and you're better than that.
Meanwhile, recall that the US CDC offered to send help to China in early January...but China refused to let any scientists, from anywhere, into the country to help until mid-February!
Feb 7: "US health experts not invited to help fight coronavirus" https://edition.cnn.com/asia/live-ne...5fd063a1174ccd
"A Month Later, China Hasn’t Let US Experts Into Country to Help With Coronavirus Outbreak" https://www.theepochtimes.com/a-mont...k_3231028.html
"The virus, known as 2019-nCoV, broke out in Wuhan in December 2019. Dr. Robert Redfield, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, made the first offer on Jan. 6."
Now let's look back in time. On January 30, the WHO explicitly ruled out quarantines.
"There is no reason for measures that unnecessarily interfere with intl. travel & trade."
https://twitter.com/WHO/status/1222969858574430217
We quarantined Wuhan a day later. "Proclamation on Suspension of Entry as Immigrants and Nonimmigrants of Persons who Pose a Risk of Transmitting 2019 Novel Coronavirus" https://www.whitehouse.gov/president...l-coronavirus/
The media and the Democrats spent the next two weeks calling the President a racist for going against the WHO recommendations.
"Health experts warn China travel ban will hinder coronavirus response" (Note original headline: "As Far Right Calls For China Travel Ban, Health Experts Warn Coronavirus Response Would Suffer") https://www.statnews.com/2020/01/31/...-would-suffer/
"The new policies contradict advice from the World Health Organization (WHO), which said yesterday that countries should not restrict travel or trade in their response to the new virus. " https://www.theverge.com/2020/1/31/2...citizens-china
“We have, right now, a crisis with the coronavirus,” Biden said in Iowa Friday. “This is no time for Donald Trump’s record of hysteria and xenophobia – hysterical xenophobia – and fearmongering to lead the way instead of science.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QiOKZ8ARmqM
"How Trump’s Panicky Coronavirus Travel Ban Cost Me $4,000 in 2 Hours to Save My Job" https://observer.com/2020/02/china-c...1-visa-holder/
"Public health experts say restrictive policies could spread fear, weaken the global response and needlessly limit civil liberties" https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/...l-ban-response
And here's a huge compilation of RACIST!!11! accusations: https://twitter.com/TheAgeofShoddy/s...97236332269569
Funny how the narrative instantly flipped in a week from "RACIST!11!" to "ISN'T DOING ENOUGH!!11!!"
Even the AP had to run a fact check because the disinformation became so heavy: "AP FACT CHECK: Democrats distort coronavirus readiness" https://apnews.com/d36d6c4de29f4d04beda3db00cb46104
Yes, "HE CUT THE BUDGET!!11! is completely false. "The National Institutes of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention aren’t suffering from budget cuts that never took effect."
(Explainer: Every year, the President submits a proposed budget to Congress. Every year, Congress completely ignores it and writes their own budget. If you remember your civics class, a key component of the separation of powers is that the President can't write legislation: the President's budget exists as a wish list and talking points. It would have been true to say "The President proposed budget cuts to the NIH, but Congress restored them"...but even that would be misleading, because the proposal cut EVERYONE's budget in an attempt to cut the deficit. Welcome to politics!)
What could have been done better? The state of Washington, and a CDC bureaucrat hired under Obama's watch, insisted on a university lab in Washington State going through Official Procedure instead of using their own test. This rule was changed on February 27th. Source: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/10/u...ng-delays.html
Meanwhile, as of today, there are 41 deaths - 19 of which came from a single nursing home in Washington. Average age of death so far: 80.
https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019...ses-in-us.html
The seasonal flu killed 51,000 people in 2014-2015. In an average year it kills over 30,000.
https://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/burden/index.html
I didn't see anyone here losing their shit or blaming Obama over that. Let's all sit down and take a deep breath. And be smart - I'm not saying "it's just the flu, bro" - but you're not going to get to see the world end. People are wishing for hundreds of thousands of HUMAN BEINGS to die just so they can say "Orange Man Bad! Told You So!" and that's fucking gross.Last edited by Spats; 03-15-2020 at 05:51 AM.

Posters who have the capacity to politicize a global pandemic are to be ignored.
Go away. This thread needs to end.

If only there was a thread about this in the Pollyasshat forum so people could post their political views and point fingers there instead of cluttering up this one.
Oh, wait.

Having been in the SLC area until yesterday, I feel really bad about all those people incoming at the airport, who are now going to be scratching their ass in what they're going to be doing now after dropping all that coin for airfare, a rental car, lodging, their passes etc. Even worse if they brought out the kids, who will probably not understand what's going on, and really pissed that their long awaited holiday just went up in smoke.
Same to all the mountain staff who are now, no doubt, standing around holding their dicks not knowing what they're going to do.
I was going to extend my stay up until Friday morning, but, even as Delta's highest level of frequent flier, I couldn't get through on the phones, and their callback time was 2.5+ hours. If you're not a senior level flier, good luck getting out within the next few days, and even more to getting someone on the phone - probably best just to camp out at the airport - sorry for you mangs, and mangettes. For some reason I just said "nevermind" and decided to keep my Friday night flight. Wow, dodged that bullet.
The one group I am really enjoying giving the finger to are the retailers in the general PC area (and Lifthouse of course). Nothing going on sale until the end of the month? Well, fuck you now! Keep all you 2019-20 gear for massive discounts next season you assholes. I was ready to get at least one, if not two in sets of boards if the price was reasonable as an unrepentant gear whore, but, oh well, fuck you, and your MAP deals. Hope you enjoy looking at it all summer you douches.
Rant over

I was thinking that another good reason to close the ski hills is to stop the fairly steady stream of injuries filling ERs as those hospitals are probably already under severe pressure from this outbreak.

Oh, really? When you're on standby so that you can make a flight within the next 4 days, so where would you be?
FYI, I consigned and sold 4 pairs of skis at L9 this season, and am some kind of annointed member due to the $ I have put through the shop. Their selection of what I was looking for wasn't the best, so had to deal with the more "traditional" shops.
Thanks for being such a douche.

I was hoping TAOS would stay open until 3/22. Nope.
3/15/2020: "Taos Ski Valley today took the proactive step to close for the remainder of the 2019-2020 ski season effective today to help prevent COVID-19 spread. Taos Ski Valley had initially alerted skiers it planned to be open through March 22 and has now made the difficult decision to close immediately out of an abundance of caution and care for the community, employees, and guests. A press release is going out now and we will post on the website shortly."

Local ski hills still open here, for now. The BC Provincial Health recently stated "This virus does not transmit when people are outdoors, so go outside and play with your family, go up to our ski hills, go up to Whistler, go out and experience what we have here in British Columbia right now.", but the paranoia is building. I’m ready for an extended Spring touring season.

Yeah, as an IKON holder currently in Jackson on a long roadtrip, my last hope is for Jackson to reopen tomorrow (unlikely, because today's "1-day closure" seems to be due to employee revolt---not due to the 14 inches of new snow overnight), and then hit Revelstoke/Banff, and low chance of hitting Alpental on my way back to Tahoe.

Lost in translation:
He’s offering you, and others, a nice place to hang out and sleep, amongst a community of like minded skiers.
We’re all kinda under a bunch of weird stress here.
We’re gonna have to cut each other a little slack. Deep breath mang...he’s your bro, I’m your bro, and you’re ours. We’re all connected.

If you're defending China, you're an asshole. They're the most despicable regime on the planet.

Yeah - understand, but he's a local Utard -
Try having three kids running around while you desperately try to find a flight within the next 4 days back to some place thousands of miles away while keeping the family together, all the while spending a fortune on airport food, having given up the rental car and trying to uber everyone to some local hotel that's already booked, and maybe such a snotty attitude becomes a bit grating.
Oh, and I put about $450 just in consignment fees at L9 this year(found money for them), not including all the things I bought there. Yes, I really like the place, but sometimes they don't have what I want and I have to go elsewhere, and once again, I'll direct another big fuck you to Jans, Lifthouse, Switchback and all the other places that were holding out trying to get the last drop.

People touting the number of infected saying it's not that high need to get a clue.
At this point you pretty much have to be admitted to an ICU to get tested, and the turnaround is 48-72 hours. There are many many critically ill that are waiting for test results. In Gunnison and Eagle counties their health departments are overrun. They are shipping critical patients to Denver, which will soon be overrun. Same thing is happening to hospitals in the pnw.
