Edge sharpeners that don’t catch on bindings?

I’m getting tired of using the type of file-guides where you clamp a long file or diamond stone to it. The length of the files makes it impossible not to catch on the toe piece and brake areas.

Are there any perhaps motorized edge sharpeners (like a shop-level thing) that can be purchased?

I’m aware of the multi-tools (which don’t have overhang), but was under the impression they suck and aren’t even accurate.


I dunno.... for actually changing a bevel angle, is it best to just leave that to a shop with a tuning machine?

Never had an issue with it catching toe pieces or brakes (assuming you strap them up) - even on my narrowest skis (74mm). Easy to adjust angles for whatever your preference is. Use a good file and this tool has worked very well for me - no problem changing bevels on skis I've bought to my preferred bevel. Hope that helps..

If file length is an issue, Terry (Slidewright) sells short panzer files 4 or 5" long.

The only file I clamp to my side edge bevel guides is a 4" Panzer, and that is just for shaping/establishing bevel. After that I only use 100/200/400 diamond stones, which are also short. No problems with brakes.

There are multiple ways and options- but it may also boil down to the way you are using and mounting the file to the edge guide (assume you are talking about the side edge as there would be NO way you would hit or touch the brakes or bindings with any base edge work- unless you do not strap the brake or some retraction of the brake like happens with a boot in the binding.)

Some ideas- take that long file and cut it to 3 or 4 inches (same or just a bit longer than your edge guide. I had a tool shop with a band saw cut a full length file into 3 pieces for me some years back. (They were a customer so did it as a favor) but a good hack saw and then a few minutes with a grinding wheel or a diamond stone to smooth the edges.

Find a Kuu Icebuster or at least the replacement file (Icebuster is available in a 90 degree and an 88 degree version) I have the 88 degree and if I want a but more, just put a strip of electrical tape down it for a bit closer to 3 degree. And your asking about a motorized or power version- there are multiple versions of what amount to a dremel type of tool that has the guide and built specifically for ski tuning with these power tools. These are a big jump in budget, but not out of reach if you do a large quiver of skis regularly: Wintersteiger Discman 2 Professional Ski Race Edge Tuning, Swix Evo Pro Edge Tuner, EdgeTune Pro II and probably some other power driven devices all designed to power sharpen ski edges.

Or just search many of the ski tuning catalogs for the replacement files for some of the multitools out there like the FK SKS that typically use a 70 mm or 3 inch file or 100mm or about 4 inches for just the spare replacement files in those lengths like some of these options:

I have the Skivisions edge tool RShea linked and it works as advertised and doesn't catch on anything. The little file is aggressive

What's it catching on? The brake? Just get stronger retaining bands that tuck the brake up higher.
