Really bad ski movie? Got one? Avalanche Sharks!

Searched youtube to show my kid the Avalanche Sharks trailer and discovered that there is a movie that looks even worse, Snow Sharks:

I forgot about that. If I remember correctly there was a pretty gruesome ankle break with some bone sticking out. Weird that they didn’t think to tie their jackets together and slither down low enough to drop.

Whoa, score! Avalanche Sharks, Ice Spiders, and Frozen are all available on Hoopla, which you may have free access to if your local library system covers it. Avalanche Sharks looks like the "winner" of the three; I may have to check it out.

And Roger Corman's Avalanche got the MST3K treatment; definitely worth the watch.

I'm a big fan of Volcano: Fire on the Mountain, which is set in a place a lot like Mammoth CA (and was Mammoth CA in the original script, but Mammoth Mountain got really upset about that and made threats and so on); it's filmed in BC Canada. Earthquakes, volcanic eruption, patroller dying from fumarole gases (the film was released before that happened in real life Mammoth), and a glorious avalanche. I treasure my VHS copy; no idea how you can watch it.

So, I just watched Avalanche Sharks (currently streaming on Hoopla). We’re talking supernatural sharks that live underneath the snowpack around California’s Mammoth Mountain (filmed on location), and seem to have been reawakened after a routine patrol-triggered avalanche. They like to jump out of the snow and munch people. And also, it’s spring break, woo hoo!, which means lots of partying, and so many young bikini-clad blondes that I kept losing track of which generic hot female character was which.

Surprisingly high production values, other than the shark action, which is drenched in stupid, of course. At one point, literally one second after a woman, angry that her boyfriend won’t commit, says "you’re never going to see me again", she’s chomped in half by (a thing that’s supposed to be) a huge shark, which jumps out of patchy snow that’s clearly no more than a few inches deep (the poor young fellow blames himself for this; his last words are even more hilarious). There's a pretty good head-being-blown-clean-off scene; the good guys shoot off his head because, even while he's being eaten by a shark, he continues to be annoying.

Then, more silly violence along those lines, a dumb ending, and that’s about it. It’s competent enough to be watchable, the scenes at Mammoth (and at the nearby Convict Lake, including great shots of Convict Canyon and the semi-popular backcountry ski peak known as Mini Morrison) are cool to see, and there’s enough ridiculous shark action to be entertaining. On the other hand, it’s schlock, obviously, and rather formulaic at that; watch the trailer, and you’ve basically seen the movie.

They filmed Shredder at a resort I used to work at. Psychotic skier going around killing other skiers. Direct to VHS, and so bad you can't look away.

Even after watching Avalanche Sharks, I felt an emptiness in my heart, which called out for yet another cinematic tale of a mutated thing killing people and ruining the spring ski season. And so, obviously, I needed to see Ice Spiders.

I nominate the various mags who appeared in this for awards. And also, the teen girl from Troll 2 (now an adult) for her bad movie appearance as total gaper.

Overall, this flick tries to take itself seriously as a creature horror, but still, you can only laugh at the spider scenes. My verdict is: less bad than Avalanche Sharks, but also a bit less fun.

I ran into the cast and crew on the day they were filming at Convict Lake.

They were about a mile from the parking lot, and looked lost and completely out of place (including the sheriff in his brown leather jacket).

I asked where they were headed. They said they were filming a movie. Based on the outfits, I assumed it was porn and didn't really need to ask any more questions.

Little did I know!
