The problem is not lack of oxygen carrying capacity. The problem is lack of oxygen. In order to function properly organs need to be perfused by blood with a minimum partial pressure of oxygen (pO2). Increasing RBC's doesn't increase pO2. We long ago learned that increasing blood count above a certain minimum doesn't improved organ function or clinical condition. The magic number is not well defined and varies with the person's condition and especially their blood volume, but somewhere in hematocrit (percentage of red blood cells) range in the 20's. Normal is 40 plus/minus. So giving EPO or just transfusing doesn't help.
That NYC ER doc sounds severely sleep deprived to me. Nothing he is saying is particularly earth-shaking or novel. You know how when you are sleep deprived you get these inspirations that you are sure are going to revolutionize something or other, but turn out to be mundane? That's what he sounds like. When the lungs air sacs fill up with fluid they want to collapse and it's necessary to apply a certain amount of constant pressure to the airway to prevent that. OTOH when the lungs get filled with fluid they become stiff and harder to inflate. In severe cases the amount of constant pressure and the peak pressure to inflate the lungs can damage the lungs. There are ways to adjust the ventilator to reduce peak pressure and reduce the damage. Nothing novel about that.
The basic dilemma is that the ventilator settings that are necessary to obtain a minimum acceptable pO2 to keep a person's organs functioning can further damage the lungs. That's why in the most severe cases people are put on ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenator), where blood bypasses the lungs is is oxygenated by a machine outside the body. The lungs aren't inflated at all. Unfortunately, these machines are scarce and it sounds like the chances of surviving Covid 19 that severe are poor, Also, from some accounts I've read at least some of the patients are dying of sudden heart failure, not lung failure--sometimes after the lungs seemed to have recovered.

Saw alot on people biking in masks yesterday. One lady had the mask down, but pulled it up when she got close to someone.

Chinese Rat Flu
75% of shoppers at grocery store today wore masks. It’s scarier every time I go.
Check out gal had no gloves but wore a mask. Said she washed her hands when she got home, then proceeded to scratch her nose, with the mask pulled down, and no gloves.
I say it’s a matter of time until they fall ill, quit, and then all end up suing. Where are the Unions protecting these people?

I think that's a mind shift most people haven't really made yet: that you aren't just wearing a mask to protect yourself, you're wearing it to protect others from catching the virus from you. Some Asian cultures have understood this for a long time and wear masks when they're sick.

That's just what they're telling you because it's going to royally fuck up their ability to use facial recognition for surveillance if everyone is wearing a mask.
I went out for a walk to the next town over and back yesterday and noticed a few people wearing masks, however, the majority were wearing them over their mouths but not their noses.

What do you need facial recognition for if most everyone has a phone on their person with a mic, camera, and location services enabled?

I recall earlier on in this thread (or one of the other covid threads) that someone linked a google doc table recording the daily totals. Was that by country or by state? Wanting to get a hold of daily numbers by-state.

Wikipedia contributors have been scraping CDC and state health authorities for case and death stats too. Eg Georgia
