Those numbers are correct, but they're total numbers, so don't really show the current situation which is shockingly worse for the U.S. in comparison to Canada. Seven day average for deaths in the U.S. is 1,011 compared to 5 for Canada.

Some people heard the Trump interviews. The ones where he creeped on his daughter or was friends with Jeffrey Epstein or said China's reaction to Tiananmen Square was good because it was "strong." Rob Ford was a benign, coked-up drunk with minimal dilusions. Trump, the bankrupt casino owner, cheater with porn stars, short-fingered vulgarian, has convinced the evangelicals that he was chosen by God--their God. Anything is possible.

Maybe I went a little too far with Ford, but anything is possible - especially when a minority can "win", which is true in both countries.

But I think it's safe to say that the relationship between populism and poor handling of covid has been firmly established. And I'm not sure anywhere is fully immune to that.

First, not picking on you. Our government and media should do a better job of getting the latest information out of our scientists, making it easy for us to find, and driving consensus. And we should be holding their feet to the fire.

Your family may not have spread anything, there's a luck factor on top of any preventive effort. Could be if every family was as careful as yours, that would be enough. Could be that's almost good enough but still too many contacts. Whatever you New Yorkers are doing, your cases have dropped very low, and you're keeping them low.

As for when we are supposed to stop everything, that is now, before the symptoms. Alternately we can stop whenever cases are increasing, or already too high. Until we have a test that tells us before we're infectious, contact tracing and isolation good enough to separate all the infectious people, or a vaccine to prevent us from getting infected, all we have is Rideski's little bird. Since we can't tell who is infectious, avoiding everyone as much as possible is the answer (pods/bubbles can work too, so long as the pods avoid each other).

China and New Zealand demonstrated how to practically eliminate Covid. Many countries demonstrated reducing it to low levels - some states, too. We could follow any of these examples and expect similar outcomes.
I did not take offense. We all have different risk tolerances. I can't let this thing scare/control my life/kids/etc. I sure ain't trying to get it or hurt others, but life doesn't just stop.
I hear other posters talking about how their kids are scared to be around people. That's simply too damaging imho. I'm trying my best to keep our lives as normal as possible. If numbers go up here I'll modify, bit for now it's working.

More plausible would be Doug Ford. OK, supposedly he has a heart after all, but that isn't guaranteed to last.

C'mon, articles like that are a running joke at this point. There's no national plan and we should expect the worst. That said, we've worked hard to flatten the curve in NYS, so it's not really us New Yorkers that should expect the worst at this point.

Are you going into Manhattan these days? From what I've read, sounds like a ghost town. The restaraunts are dropping literally like flies.

That's the problem. Everyone's trying to live as close to normal as possible, yet the situation is far from normal. It's all working until the day you get sick - then it's not. There's no margin for error.

Yeah, I read the street scene is bizarre, with hardly any civilians, and Rikers emptied out.

Populism is wrapped up in that whole religious nut job thing which we don't really have up here, so a whole shwack of people who elect a POTUS simply becuz he sez he believes in the guy in the sky so even if he doesnt really he will pander to them

Peter Mackay the pretender to be the Conservative party leader was quoted as saying the current leader Andrew Scheer's socially conservative values were a "stinking albatross." around his neck , which was a colorful refrence to the poem rime of the ancient mariner

in other words mackay is saying the conservatives up here are never gona get into power if they don't distance themselves from all the socially conservative things that get people elected down thar

up here nobody sez god bless to one another, no body sez thots and prayers and if you goggle "the quiet revolution" you can read about the secularization of the whole province of quebec

Canadians have chose anyone but the conservative guy in the last 2 elections and now that they have watched Trump fuck it all up royaly which will not bode well for the social conservatives anywhere let alone canada

Same deal in Portland, minus Rikers inmates (at least, as far as I know). The office worker crowd is pretty much absent, tent cities are multiplying, and the Ritz Carlton hotel construction project in downtown (admittedly planned years ago) is going full speed ahead, because what we really need is another blatant illustration of the gap between haves and have-nots. Interesting times, right?

A lot of sheriffs are elected so it is possible to push them out.
